Dr. Linlin (Lincoln) Xu and his research team at the University of Calgary are seeking passionate and motivated MASc and PhD students to join our cutting-edge research team starting 2026 and 2027. Our research focuses on the intersection of AI, Machine Learning, and Remote Sensing technologies to solve critical environmental challenges. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative projects in geospatial data science and environmental monitoring.
Key Research Areas:
Big Geospatial Data Science and AI Analytics
Sensor Integration (e.g., Hyperspectral, Multispectral, LiDAR, SAR)
Intelligent Pan-Arctic Ocean Environment Sensing and Mapping (e.g., sea/lake ice, oil spills, Arctic species)
Intelligent Northern Land Environment Sensing and Mapping (e.g., wildfire, vegetation, soil parameters)
3D Urban Environment Modeling and Digital Twins using Neural Radiative Field (NeRF) and Gaussian Splatting
Responsibilities:
Conduct advanced research in AI, machine learning, and remote sensing to develop intelligent geospatial analytics solutions.
Analyze large-scale geospatial data (e.g., multispectral, hyperspectral, LiDAR, SAR) using cutting-edge AI and machine learning models.
Collaborate with a dynamic team of researchers to design and implement AI-driven geospatial systems.
Contribute to high-impact journal publications and conferences.
Bachelor's degree in Geomatics Engineering, Computer Science, Geography, or a related field.
Strong interest in geospatial data science, remote sensing, and AI technologies.
Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python) and machine learning libraries (e.g., Py
Torch) is a plus.

About Dr. Linlin (Lincoln) Xu: Dr. Linlin (Lincoln) Xu is an interdisciplinary researcher with a dual background in Geomatics Engineering and Computer Science. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Waterloo and is a leading expert in AI, Machine Learning, Remote Sensing, and Environmental Monitoring. Dr. Xu has authored over 135 journal papers, secured numerous competitive grants, and successfully supervised over 15 PhD students, 10 MASc students, and 5 undergraduate students.
