The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly capable AI Engineer who thrives at the intersection of product development, applied AI, and software engineering. You will own the intelligence layer behind customer-facing features—from prompt design and agent architecture to evaluation frameworks and production deployment.

This role is ideal for someone who has already shipped LLM-powered products, understands the realities of production AI systems, and enjoys solving ambiguous problems where success depends on experimentation, measurement, and execution.

You will collaborate closely with product and platform teams to transform ideas into reliable AI capabilities that deliver measurable business value. The ideal candidate understands that building great AI products requires far more than selecting a model—it requires thoughtful evaluation, rigorous testing, strong engineering discipline, and relentless iteration.

What You'll Do

Build Production AI Experiences

• Own the complete lifecycle of AI-powered features, from initial concept and prototyping through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization.
• Create intelligent workflows that combine large language models, retrieval systems, structured data, and external tools.
• Develop scalable agent architectures capable of solving real-world business problems.
• Translate customer and product requirements into reliable AI functionality that users depend on daily.

Drive AI Quality & Reliability

• Continuously improve model outputs through prompt engineering, retrieval strategies, orchestration techniques, and model selection.
• Design evaluation frameworks that accurately measure quality, consistency, accuracy, and user impact.
• Build testing systems that identify regressions before they reach production.
• Balance performance, latency, cost, and reliability while maintaining a high-quality user experience.

Architect Intelligent Systems

• Develop agent-based workflows that coordinate reasoning, retrieval, tool usage, and decision-making.
• Implement scalable orchestration patterns for complex multi-step AI processes.
• Explore emerging AI technologies and determine when new models, frameworks, or techniques create meaningful product advantages.
• Contribute to architectural decisions that influence the future direction of the AI platform.

Collaborate Across Engineering & Product

• Partner closely with product leaders to define requirements and success metrics.
• Work alongside platform engineers to ensure AI systems are deployed on resilient, scalable infrastructure.
• Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and architecture planning.
• Help establish best practices for AI development, evaluation, and deployment across the organization.

What We're Looking For

• 3–8 years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful experience building AI-powered applications.
• Demonstrated success shipping LLM-driven products or features used by real customers in production environments.
• Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js and/or Python.
• Experience developing applications using leading AI platforms and model providers.
• Practical expertise in prompt engineering, retrieval systems, agent workflows, and model evaluation.
• Experience creating testing and evaluation methodologies that improve output quality and reduce regressions.
• Strong understanding of production software development, deployment practices, and system reliability.
• Ability to work independently in fast-moving environments where priorities evolve quickly.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building multi-model or provider-agnostic AI systems.
• Knowledge of vector databases, semantic search, and retrieval architectures.
• Experience with fine-tuning, post-training optimization, or model customization.
• Background deploying AI services in cloud-native environments.
• Experience with structured outputs, tool calling, workflow orchestration, and agent frameworks.
• Familiarity with distributed computing platforms used for large-scale inference and evaluation workloads.
• Contributions to open-source AI tooling, frameworks, or developer ecosystems.
• Experience working in startup environments, particularly as an early engineering hire or founding team member.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-person position based in San Francisco. The team works together onsite five days per week, fostering rapid collaboration, fast decision-making, and continuous innovation.
