ROLE PURPOSE
The Process Safety Manager provides direct process safety support to Group QHSE and works with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Distribution, Projects and country teams to strengthen process safety risk management across Gulf Cryo. The role acts as the technical authority for process safety governance, risk studies, assurance, training and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will lead, coach and challenge the organization to identify major accident hazards, verify critical controls and ensure that new and existing operations meet Gulf Cryo process safety expectations.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIESOwn and continuously improve Group process safety policies, standards, work instructions, tools, and governance frameworks, ensuring alignment with corporate risk criteria, legal requirements, and industry best practices.
Lead and review process hazard and risk assessments, including HAZOP, What-If, LOPA, QRA, fault tree analysis, consequence modelling, building siting, and public risk studies, ensuring robust risk identification and mitigation.
Serve as the functional owner for key process safety standards, systems, and work processes, driving consistency and standardization across all Gulf Cryo operations.
Provide technical leadership on mechanical integrity and critical safeguards, including pressure systems, relief devices, safety-critical equipment, alarm management, and barrier effectiveness.
Lead or support SIL and SIS assessments, ensuring safety instrumented systems and independent protection layers are appropriately designed, verified, and maintained.
Support and challenge Management of Change (MOC) processes, ensuring risks associated with plant, process, equipment, technology, organizational, and operational changes are adequately assessed and controlled.
Lead Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) and operational readiness assessments for new facilities, major modifications, and restart activities to ensure safe commissioning and startup.
Plan and participate in process safety audits, assurance reviews, and compliance assessments, verifying the effectiveness and closure of corrective actions.
Develop process safety competence across the organization through training, coaching, mentoring, and capability-building initiatives for leaders, engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel.
Provide technical support during high-potential process safety incident investigations, ensuring robust root cause analysis and effective implementation of lessons learned.
Act as the central process safety advisor and representative for Gulf Cryo, engaging with industry bodies, external stakeholders, and internal functions to promote best practices and knowledge sharing.
Monitor and report process safety performance, including leading indicators, critical action tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance risk visibility and operational resilience.TECHNICAL SCOPEThe role covers process safety support across existing and new Gulf Cryo operations, including but not limited to:

- Recommend minimum process safety requirements for Group approval and implementation
- Stop or escalate any process safety risk that is not controlled to an acceptable level
- Require additional review, evidence or independent technical input before high risk changes are approved
- Challenge startup or restart readiness when critical actions, safeguards or competence requirements are not complete
- Define process safety training needs and technical competence expectations with Group QHSE and relevant functionsKey InterfacesGroup QHSE: Collaborates on process safety strategy, governance, incident investigations and learning, audit programs, performance monitoring, and escalation of significant process safety risks.
- Engineering and Projects: Provides support on technical standards, design reviews, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), new plant developments, retrofit projects, and acquisition due diligence activities.
- Operations and Maintenance: Partners with site teams to strengthen critical control implementation, mechanical integrity programs, operating procedures, workforce competence, and operational readiness.
- Country Teams: Supports the consistent implementation of process safety requirements across locations through audits, training, coaching, and verification of corrective action closure.
- Customer Engineering: Provides technical guidance for customer site risk reviews, engineering support, and alignment of process safety expectations and standards.
- External Bodies: Engages with industry associations, technical committees, regulatory stakeholders, and professional forums to facilitate benchmarking, standards development, knowledge sharing, and external representation of Gulf Cryo.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications and ExperienceEducation
- Minimum Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Formal education, specialization, or coursework in Process Safety is desirable.
- A Master's degree or other advanced qualification will be considered an advantage.
- Industry Experience: Minimum 15 years of professional experience within the industrial gases, petrochemical, chemical, or related process industries, with exposure to process engineering, plant engineering, or similar technical disciplines.
- Process Safety Experience: Minimum 10 years of dedicated process safety experience, either as a primary role or a significant component of job responsibilities.
- Industrial Gas Experience: Current or previous experience within the industrial gases sector is strongly preferred, particularly in process engineering or plant engineering roles.
- Experience with Air Separation Units (ASU) and Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) facilities is highly desirable.
- Operations Experience: Experience in plant operations, production support, or site-based engineering roles is preferred to ensure a practical understanding of operational challenges and risk management in industrial environments.
- Professional Certifications: Recognized process safety certifications such as Certified Chemical Process Safety Professional (CCPSC), Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP), or equivalent credentials are preferred.
- Standards and Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of process safety and industrial gas industry standards and guidelines, including CGA, EIGA, MEGA, and applicable national and local regulatory requirements.
