Role Description
Canada
Wheels is seeking a Front-End Engineer (Intermediate/Senior) for a full-time, on-site role based in Ottawa, ON. The Front-End Engineer will design and implement user-facing features, create responsive web designs, optimize user experiences, and ensure cross-browser compatibility. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with the design and back-end teams to develop seamless integrations, troubleshooting and debugging issues, and contributing to scalable web development efforts using modern technologies.
Responsibilities
Own major areas of the product, end to end, across React and PHP
Make architectural decisions that affect performance, maintainability, and user experience
Lead code review and contribute to technical direction
Troubleshoot and resolve issues on the live production system
Mentor more junior engineers and help raise the team’s overall bar
What we’re looking for
Script and deep React experience, including a working understanding of its rendering model
Solid grasp of HTML, CSS, and responsive web design
Experience with performance and core web vitals
Fluency with the browser as a platform: HTTP, the DOM, performance, accessibility
Experience with at least one server-side language (PHP preferred) and willingness to work across the stack
Comfort with database design and SQL
Track record of shipping production software to real users and supporting it over time
Sound judgment about when to reach for a library and when to write something yourself
A habit of learning, tinkering, and revisiting your own assumptions
Experience with version control (Git)
Nice to have
Magento experience
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS) or containerization (Docker)
Experience using AI tools as part of a coding workflow
