Job overview and responsibilities

The Senior Manager of Environmental Sustainability will be responsible for sustainability planning and supporting United's decarbonization teams in meeting the company's climate targets.

The Senior Manager is responsible for technical oversight of programmatic elements of United’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) program, like working with industry peers to ensure harmonization with industry best practices, advocating and monitoring within technical working groups, and engaging with producers to ensure an understanding on roadblocks and mitigations necessary to scale SAF across the market.

Senior Manager will also work closely with United Airlines Ventures to progress investments in a portfolio of clean technology solutions that will one day scale to help United meet its climate targets. Support other duties as assigned.

• Leads efforts to support United Airlines Ventures - Support United Airlines Ventures' efforts in investing in sustainable technologies to decarbonize the company Support management in technical and environmental diligence reviews, providing analysis where needed in determining potential environmental benefit, of potential investments
• Support Ventures organization in evaluation of investment pipeline as well as developing and managing leadership communication on environmental impact of investments
• Engage in SAF scaling efforts across industry – Ensure harmonization with standards across industry as well as engagement with production supply chain to scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
• Drive standardization, transparency, and a transition toward lower-carbon SAF
• Professional development and team engagement - Establish individual goals that align with United's climate ambition: net zero carbon emissions by 2050
• Develop individual career development and training plans with management
• Use technical knowledge and experience to provide thoughtful decision-making and guidance in strategic implementation of United's climate strategy and program
• Be solution-oriented and committed to creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation
• Model integrity, possess self-awareness, and foster an environment of accountability
• Manage portfolio of existing suppliers – Work with existing offtake providers to manage ongoing supply of SAF
• Strategically support investment portfolio companies in SAF commercialization efforts

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications)

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental sciences/policy or environmental or chemical engineering degree
• 5+ years of related experience
• Understanding of energy markets, with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) knowledge a plus
• Strong business and financial acumen to evaluate potential strategies and opportunities relevant to our business
• Experience in evaluating complex business challenges and developing pragmatic solutions
• Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including communities, government officials, NGOs, employees, etc.
• General understanding of environmental regulations and sustainability
• Strong interpersonal and judgment skills to lead cross-divisional teams towards collective
• Strong analytical skills, strategic/innovative thinking, and long-term vision
• Ability to “scan the horizon” and apply risk/benefit approach to emerging issues
• Strong communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior management and/or external audiences required
• Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
• Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
• Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

• Master's degree
• 9+ years of related experience
• Airline or hard-to-abate industry experience preferred.
• Background in fuels research or production
• Understanding of chemistry or engineering practices around SAF production

The base pay range for this role is $127,870.00 to $166,492.00.

The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
