Position Summary

As a Backend Developer on our Prediction Markets team, you will help build and maintain a secure, multi-tenant prediction-market platform designed for Latin American markets. You will contribute to APIs, databases, integrations, background processing, real-time services, financial workflows, and production support.

Responsibilities

Backend Application Development

• Design, implement, test, and maintain backend services using PHP and Laravel.
• Develop background jobs, scheduled tasks, queue-driven workflows, and retry processes.
• Support real-time updates using Redis, Laravel Reverb, and WebSockets.
• Contribute to market-data imports, price feeds, resolution monitoring, and market localization.
• Contribute to ledger, fee, reconciliation, and reporting workflows.

API & Integration Development

• Develop REST and GraphQL APIs for public, administrative, and integration use cases.
• Integrate with external transactional, sportsbook, wallet, market-data, and trading APIs.
• Maintain backward compatibility when changing APIs, database structures, GraphQL schemas, or event contracts.
• Implement explicit handling for timeouts, retries, duplicate messages, rate limits, stale data, and partial failures.

Database & Data Management

• Create and maintain PostgreSQL database schemas, migrations, relationships, indexes, and queries.
• Build and maintain deterministic financial reports, audit trails, and data exports.

Security, Compliance & Governance

• Implement request validation, authentication, authorization, role-based access control, and audit logging.
• Build and maintain audit trails and reporting capabilities to support compliance and traceability.
• Ensure tenant data isolation and secure access controls within multi-tenant environments.

Platform Architecture & Multi-Tenant Solutions

• Contribute to multi-tenant application development, domain-based tenant resolution, and tenant data isolation.
• Design and support scalable, resilient backend services and distributed processing workflows.
• Maintain compatibility across evolving application, data, and integration architectures.

Quality Assurance, Testing & Reliability

• Write and maintain unit, integration, API, queue-processing, security, and multi-tenant tests.
• Diagnose application, database, queue, cache, real-time, and external-integration failures.
• Implement resilient processing patterns for fault tolerance, recovery, and operational stability.

Production Operations & Support

• Contribute to deployment readiness, operational documentation, observability, and incident follow-up.
• Participate in the weekly Tier 3 on-call rotation, investigating escalated production issues and working with Service Desk, Technical Support, infrastructure teams, external partners, and engineering team members to restore service.
• Support production monitoring, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and service restoration activities.

Agile Development & Engineering Practices

• Participate in estimation, technical design, code reviews, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions and operational enhancements.
• Contribute to engineering standards, knowledge sharing, and best practices.

Mandatory Qualifications

• Legally eligible to work in Canada
• Fluent in English (speak, read, write)
• Able to work an on-call rotation of 1 week on/7 weeks off

Minimum Qualifications

• 2 years of backend development experience
• Experience developing and supporting backend applications using PHP and Laravel.
• Experience designing and maintaining REST APIs and service-based applications.
• Experience working with relational databases, SQL, and database design concepts.
• Experience implementing secure application-development practices, including authentication, authorization, and validation.
• Experience developing background jobs, queue-based processing, and automated tests.
• Experience with Git, Docker, and modern software development practices, including CI/CD.
• Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field
• 5 years of backend development experience
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, GraphQL, WebSockets, or event-driven architectures.
• Experience developing multi-tenant, distributed, or cloud-native applications.
• Experience with AWS services and containerized infrastructure.
• Experience with Laravel ecosystem technologies, such as Horizon, Nova, Sanctum, Octane, or tenancy frameworks.
• Experience with application monitoring, observability, performance tuning, and operational support.
• Knowledge of secure software development practices, including OWASP principles, role-based access control, and audit logging.
• Experience in financial services, payment processing, fintech, gaming, lottery, or other regulated industries.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and experience with financial reporting, reconciliation, or transaction-processing systems.
