Role and Responsibilities
The Store Food Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations of the grocery/food department within a Dollar General retail store. This role ensures efficient inventory control, proper food handling, product presentation, and excellent customer service. Key responsibilities include:
- Grocery & Food Operations: Supervise grocery and food-related activities including stocking, rotation, and merchandising. Ensure compliance with food handling regulations and sanitation policies. Oversee shelf presentation, plan-o-gram execution, pricing, and signage. Monitor markdowns and damages while maintaining accurate inventory levels through audits and handheld terminal (HHT) use. Manage tote inventory and ensure timely processing of deliveries.
- Leadership & Training: Act as Manager on Duty when needed. Provide training and coaching on food safety, stocking standards, and recovery practices. Assist with scheduling, staffing, task delegation, and performance management for the grocery/food team.
- Customer Service: Deliver excellent customer service by ensuring the grocery area is organized, clean, and well-stocked. Address customer concerns promptly and lead by example in providing assistance and engagement.
- Store Operations Support: Assist with daily operations such as opening/closing procedures, register functions, refunds, and overrides. Maintain financial integrity with proper cash handling and key control. Help ensure a safe and secure working and shopping environment while supporting receiving processes and backroom organization.
Required Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 2–3 years of retail clerk experience
- Supervisory or lead experience in a grocery or retail setting preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain local/state food handling certifications (as required)
- Knowledge of food handling and sanitation standards
- Ability to read and execute plan-o-grams and merchandising standards
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Comfortable using handheld inventory and scanning devices
- Ability to perform basic math and cash register functions
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs (occasionally up to 55 lbs)
- Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment, including exposure to varying temperatures
- Occasional use of ladders and equipment such as pricing guns and box cutters
