Role and Responsibilities
The Food Operations Manager is responsible for leading the grocery and food department within a Dollar General store. This role ensures smooth inventory management, adherence to food safety regulations, effective merchandising, and excellent customer service. Key responsibilities include:
- Grocery & Food Operations: Oversee stocking, rotation, and merchandising of food products. Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards. Maintain planogram accuracy, pricing, markdowns, damages, tote inventory, and delivery processing. Perform regular inventory audits using handheld devices.
- Leadership & Training: Act as Manager on Duty when required. Provide coaching and guidance on food safety, stocking practices, and recovery procedures. Support scheduling, staffing, task delegation, and performance management for the grocery team.
- Customer Service: Keep the grocery area clean, organized, and fully stocked. Respond promptly to customer inquiries and demonstrate exemplary service standards.
- Store Operations Support: Assist with daily store operations including opening and closing, register management, refunds, and overrides. Ensure proper cash handling, key control, safety, security, and organized backroom operations.
Required Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2–3 years of retail clerk experience.
- Supervisory or leadership experience in grocery or retail preferred.
- Ability to obtain and maintain state or local food handling certifications.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.
- Ability to read and implement planograms and merchandising standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience using handheld inventory and scanning devices.
- Basic math skills and familiarity with cash register operations.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs (up to 55 lbs occasionally with assistance).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment with varying temperatures.
- Occasional use of ladders and equipment such as pricing guns and box cutters.
