The Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI), an applied public health research center within Sinai Chicago, is dedicated to improving the health of Chicago’s urban communities and advancing health equity.

SUHI’s multidisciplinary team of approximately 60 professionals—including social epidemiologists, research scientists, community health workers, evaluators, intervention specialists, and community engagement experts—works collaboratively to identify health inequities, co-create community-driven solutions, evaluate outcomes, and scale effective interventions.

Since 2017, SUHI has expanded its business strategy to extend its expertise to a broader range of clients while supporting organizational sustainability and mission impact. With a strong portfolio of approximately 25 active clients and annual earned revenue of approximately $700,000, SUHI is poised for significant growth.

Position Summary

SUHI seeks a strategic, entrepreneurial, and mission-driven Director of Business Development and Marketing to lead the organization’s revenue growth and market expansion efforts.

Reporting directly to the President and partnering closely with SUHI’s senior leadership team, as well as Sinai Chicago’s business, development, and public relations teams, the Director will develop and execute a comprehensive growth strategy aimed at increasing revenue by 30% over the next three years and securing at least five new clients annually.

This leader will play a pivotal role in expanding SUHI’s social enterprise portfolio, strengthening its market presence, and elevating its brand visibility.

Working at the intersection of public health, healthcare, community development, and business strategy, the Director will cultivate strategic partnerships, drive revenue-generating opportunities, and position SUHI as a national leader in mission-aligned innovation and social impact.

This position will initially be structured as a salary-based role focused on developing growth strategies and infrastructure. Over time, a performance-based compensation component will be introduced to reward achievement of strategic growth and mission-aligned objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development (60%)

• Develop and execute a comprehensive business development and revenue growth strategy for SUHI’s earned revenue initiatives.
• Build, manage, and maintain a robust pipeline of prospective clients, partnerships, grants, contracts, and other revenue opportunities.
• Lead business prospecting efforts, pitch development, proposal creation, and contract negotiations.
• Collaborate with programmatic and finance teams to develop sustainable business models, pricing strategies, and service offerings.
• Coordinate with legal counsel to negotiate, finalize, and execute contracts and partnership agreements.
• Monitor revenue performance, maintain forecasting models, and report progress against growth targets.
• Establish scalable business development systems, processes, tools, and performance metrics.
• Lead the development and execution of short- and long-term business plans under the direction of the SUHI President.
• Serve as a strategic advisor on business development opportunities across Sinai Chicago’s priority initiatives.
• Identify and cultivate new markets, strategic alliances, and opportunities for growth aligned with SUHI’s mission.
• Develop and maintain long-term relationships with health systems, payers, community-based organizations, workforce development agencies, government entities, foundations, and other strategic stakeholders.

Marketing and Brand Strategy (30%)

• Develop and oversee marketing strategies that increase brand awareness, lead generation, and market visibility.
• Lead brand positioning, messaging, and storytelling efforts for SUHI’s social impact and service portfolio.
• Partner with SUHI leadership, Sinai Chicago’s marketing team, and external consultants to ensure alignment and effectiveness of marketing initiatives.
• Ensure consistent, mission-centered communication across all platforms and audiences.
• Translate SUHI’s research, evaluation, technical assistance, and programmatic expertise into market-ready solutions and value propositions.
• Support the creation of marketing materials, thought leadership content, presentations, and client-facing communications.
• Monitor market trends and customer insights to strengthen competitive positioning and improve business outcomes.

Leadership and Cross-Functional Collaboration (10%)

• Partner with the SUHI leadership team to shape organizational strategy and growth priorities.
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and data-driven decision-making.
• Represent SUHI and Sinai Chicago at conferences, industry events, community forums, and partner meetings.
• Conduct ongoing market and competitive analyses to strengthen SUHI’s value proposition locally and nationally.
• Collaborate effectively across departments to align business development, communications, finance, and operational objectives.
• Provide strategic guidance on emerging opportunities, trends, and risks impacting SUHI’s growth and sustainability.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, marketing, sales, or related functions.
• Demonstrated success developing and executing revenue growth strategies and achieving measurable business outcomes.
• Experience managing and cultivating strategic partnerships with external stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, financial modeling, and business planning skills.
• Exceptional written, verbal, presentation, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to balance mission-driven objectives with market and business realities.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively in complex, cross-functional environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree strongly preferred, particularly an MBA or related graduate degree.
• Experience within nonprofit organizations, social enterprises, healthcare systems, public health organizations, consulting firms, or mission-driven enterprises.
• Proven track record of launching new ventures, scaling revenue-generating initiatives, or growing business portfolios.
• Experience with business-to-business (B2B) sales, social entrepreneurship, impact investing, or healthcare-related services.
• Knowledge of public health, healthcare delivery systems, health equity initiatives, and community-based programming.
