We're looking for an exceptional AI Operations Lead to define and execute the strategy for applying artificial intelligence across our partners next-generation computing and scientific platforms.

In this role, you'll lead the development of AI-driven capabilities that accelerate calibration, improve diagnostics, predict system behaviour, and enhance operational decision-making across complex hardware environments.

You'll work at the intersection of AI, advanced hardware, controls engineering, and scientific software, ensuring AI augments operator expertise while deterministic control systems remain the authoritative source for safety, timing, and machine control.

This is a unique opportunity to build the roadmap for operational AI within a highly sophisticated engineering environment.

What You'll Do

As the AI for Advanced Systems Operations Lead, you will:

• Define and own the strategic roadmap for AI-assisted operations, including calibration optimisation, imaging and sensor analysis, drift prediction, root-cause diagnosis, and automated recovery recommendations.
• Partner closely with systems engineers, software engineers, controls specialists, hardware teams, and machine learning experts to identify high-value opportunities where AI can safely improve operational performance.
• Establish and champion a bounded AI architecture, where AI provides recommendations, predictions, ranking, and constrained optimisation while deterministic control software remains responsible for validation, execution, rollback, hardware protection, and safety.
• Drive the delivery of AI initiatives across calibration management, telemetry platforms, data acquisition pipelines, operational workflows, and system health monitoring.
• Define standards for data quality, traceability, model validation, observability, offline replay, deployment governance, and explainability to build confidence in AI-assisted decision-making.
• Translate operational challenges into measurable AI outcomes, reducing calibration time, improving system performance, accelerating fault diagnosis, detecting drift earlier, and increasing overall platform availability.
• Lead cross-functional planning, prioritisation, resource allocation, milestone delivery, and stakeholder engagement across engineering and research teams.

What You'll Bring

Essential

• Proven technical leadership delivering AI/ML solutions within complex engineering, scientific, robotics, controls, manufacturing, or hardware environments.
• Experience deploying machine learning models into production systems where reliability, traceability, safety, and operator trust are critical.
• Strong ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams spanning software, hardware, operations, controls, and research.
• Excellent systems thinking with a clear understanding of where AI creates value and where deterministic software must remain in control.

• Delivering a clear AI Operations roadmap with defined ownership, milestones, and governance.
• Successfully deploying bounded AI capabilities into calibration, diagnostics, and operational workflows.
• Demonstrating measurable improvements in calibration efficiency, diagnosis speed, recovery time, drift detection, and overall system availability.
• Establishing robust governance for model validation, deployment approval, data provenance, explainability, and operator confidence.
