About The Heinz Endowments
Formed in 2007 through the merger of the Howard Heinz Endowment, established in 1941, and the Vira I. Heinz Endowment, established in 1986, The Heinz Endowments is one of the largest independent philanthropic organizations in the United States.
Dedicated to improving the quality of life throughout the Pittsburgh region and beyond, the Foundation advances its mission through strategic grantmaking, partnerships, and civic leadership. While the majority of its grantmaking remains concentrated in southwest Pennsylvania, the Endowments also supports initiatives across Pennsylvania and nationally that strengthen and complement its regional impact.
Operating at the intersection of place, regional dynamics, and global trends, the Endowments currently focuses on seven strategic priorities: Arts & Culture; Civic Participation; Climate, Environment & Health; Food Systems; Community & Economic Development; Veterans; and Workforce.
In fiscal year 2025, the Foundation operated on a $19 million budget and awarded more than $92 million in grants and program-related investments.
Technology plays an increasingly strategic role in advancing this mission.
Following significant investments in cloud technologies, enterprise applications, collaboration platforms, and data capabilities, the Foundation is seeking a visionary technology leader who can maximize these investments while ensuring a strong security posture, advancing responsible AI adoption, and positioning the organization for the future.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer/Vice President of Finance & Administration and managing the IT Specialist , the Director of Information Technology serves as the Foundation's senior technology leader and trusted advisor on technology strategy, cybersecurity, enterprise risk, data governance, and responsible AI adoption.
This role extends well beyond traditional IT operations. The successful candidate will develop and execute a technology roadmap that aligns with organizational priorities, protects sensitive information, ensures cyber resilience, and enables staff to leverage technology to improve collaboration, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness.
The Director will lead enterprise technology initiatives, oversee infrastructure and vendor partnerships, champion change management, and foster a culture where technology is secure, accessible, and viewed as a strategic business enabler.
They will also guide the thoughtful implementation of artificial intelligence by establishing governance, identifying practical business applications, and ensuring new technologies are introduced responsibly, ethically, and securely.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a collaborative leader who enjoys partnering with executives and across business functions, translating complex technology into practical business solutions, and helping shape the future of one of the region's most respected philanthropic organizations.
This position is based in Pittsburgh and is expected to work in the office Monday through Thursday, with flexibility to work remotely on Fridays.
The ideal candidate is a strategic technology executive who combines strong business acumen with deep technical expertise. They understand that technology is not simply an operational function, but a catalyst for organizational performance, collaboration, and informed decision-making.
They bring demonstrated experience leading cybersecurity initiatives, managing enterprise technology risk, strengthening data governance, guiding digital transformation, and helping organizations successfully adopt new technologies through thoughtful change management.
Equally important, they possess exceptional communication skills, executive presence, and a collaborative leadership style that inspires confidence across all levels of the organization.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
This is not a traditional Director of Information Technology position. It is an opportunity to shape the digital future of one of the region's most respected philanthropic organizations.
The successful candidate will influence enterprise strategy, advance responsible AI, improve data governance, and help build a secure, resilient technology environment that enables the Foundation to expand its impact for years to come.
Success in this role requires more than technical expertise. The Director is expected to be responsive, approachable, and highly collaborative—someone who builds genuine relationships, listens carefully, follows through on commitments, and makes technology accessible rather than intimidating.
They will cultivate an IT organization viewed as a trusted business partner and model those same values through the leadership and development of their team.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $170,000–$192,000, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package that includes outstanding healthcare coverage, generous retirement contributions and matching, paid time off, and paid parking downtown, among others.
