Financial Controller

Position Summary

The Financial Controller is a senior financial leader responsible for overseeing the accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting support, and financial systems for a growing church and private Christian school with annual revenues of $25+ million.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this position is ideal for a highly motivated finance professional who desires to make a significant organizational impact. The Controller will serve as a strategic partner to leadership while maintaining hands-on responsibility for the organization's accounting and financial operations.

This is not a traditional accounting position. We are seeking a proactive leader who thrives on improving processes, building systems, solving problems, and helping an organization grow. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who takes ownership, drives results, and consistently looks for ways to strengthen financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

• Lead all day-to-day accounting operations for the church and school.
• Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
• Oversee general ledger activity, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
• Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
• Support the CFO with strategic planning, forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis.
• Prepare financial reports and presentations for executive leadership, finance committees, and boards.

Process Improvement & Systems Leadership

• Evaluate existing financial processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Lead initiatives that increase efficiency, scalability, and financial transparency.
• Develop and implement best practices across accounting and finance functions.
• Partner with departments to improve workflows and operational effectiveness.
• Leverage technology and automation to enhance organizational performance.

Team Development

• Supervise and develop accounting and finance staff.
• Establish clear expectations, accountability, and professional growth opportunities to team members.
• Foster a culture of excellence, service, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Compliance & Stewardship

• Coordinate annual audits and maintain audit readiness throughout the year.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable regulations.
• Maintain strong stewardship of organizational resources.
• Oversee financial documentation and record retention.

Strategic Partnership

• Serve as a trusted advisor to ministry, school, and operational leaders.
• Provide financial insight that supports organizational decision-making.
• Participate in strategic initiatives, special projects, and growth opportunities.
• Assist leadership in evaluating financial risks, opportunities, and long-term sustainability.
• Handles other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
• Proven experience managing accounting operations and financial processes.
• Advanced analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

Preferred

• CPA designation.
• Experience in nonprofit accounting for church, private school, or ministry environments, and with donor restricted funds.
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems and financial technology platforms. Experience with Sage Intacct is a plus.
• Experience managing teams and leading organizational change.

Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
