National Electric Coil
Title: In-House Counsel Opportunities — Multiple Levels
Location: Columbus, OH
Reports To: VP – Commercial & General Counsel
Department: Commercial
Job Type: Full-Time
$100,000 – $200,000
National Electric Coil (“NEC”) is rapidly expanding its presence in the power-generation support-services market and is conducting a multi-level attorney search. Depending on experience, qualifications, leadership capabilities, and NEC’s needs, the candidate may be hired as Associate Commercial Counsel, Commercial Counsel, General Counsel, or Lead General Counsel.
Regardless of level, the initial focus will include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements. The breadth of responsibility, authority, and involvement in other legal and commercial matters will vary by position and candidate. The attorney will also have opportunities to build relationships and develop a strong professional network within the power-generation legal community.
NEC is the world’s largest independent, privately owned company specializing in the upgrade, repowering, overhaul, and repair of large, utility-class power generators.
For more than 100 years, NEC has supported the power-generation industry and earned a worldwide reputation as a preferred independent alternative to original equipment manufacturers (“OEMs”) for the upgrade and emergency repair of critical rotating electrical assets.
NEC is a project-driven company focused on returning large generators to service. Its integrated design, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and field-service capabilities are unmatched among independent providers. An in-house technical team, customized tooling, specialized equipment, and master technicians support every stage of production and field execution.
Operating across engineering, construction, manufacturing, and field services, NEC supports critical energy infrastructure for utilities, agencies, manufacturers, and service providers. With more than $100 million in annual revenue and projects often exceeding $5 million, NEC occupies a critical position in the U.S. and global energy supply chain.
These accomplishments represent only part of NEC’s experience. As NEC grows, the attorneys who negotiate these projects and guide their execution will play an increasingly important role. The ability to negotiate sophisticated contracts efficiently and support their implementation can become a distinctive professional capability.
WHY NEC MAY BE YOUR FIRST CHOICE FOR AN IN-HOUSE LEGAL CAREER
An attorney at NEC works inside a privately owned, technically sophisticated company serving critical energy infrastructure. Rather than functioning as a narrowly defined legal resource, NEC’s attorneys work closely with executive leadership and professionals across engineering, manufacturing, construction, field services, project management, finance, sales, and commercial operations.
The work may involve sophisticated agreements, major capital projects, complex customer and supplier relationships, risk management, disputes, regulatory and corporate matters, litigation management, and strategic decisions. NEC’s high-value, mission-critical work allows attorneys to develop legal, commercial, and operational experience that may be difficult to obtain in a narrowly structured in-house role.
NEC offers meaningful responsibility, leadership exposure, and substantial professional-growth potential. The successful candidate can support essential infrastructure while building a legal career that integrates legal judgment, commercial strategy, project execution, and business leadership.
NEC’s attorneys sit within its Commercial department and support the full project lifecycle—from proposal development and negotiation through execution, closeout, claims, and dispute resolution—while managing the legal, commercial, operational, and financial risks of large-scale projects.
The principal focus will be drafting, reviewing, and negotiating proposals, purchase orders, contracts, and related customer agreements. The attorney will work with NEC’s technical, commercial, and operational teams to ensure commitments accurately reflect NEC’s scope, pricing, schedule, assumptions, performance obligations, risk allocation, and ability to execute successfully.
The position may also include supply-chain contracting, project execution, change management, claims, insurance, warranties, financial and regulatory issues, litigation management, and corporate matters. Its scope may evolve with the attorney’s development and NEC’s changing needs.
Commercial Agreements
Broader Legal and Commercial Support
Project Execution, Finance, and Strategy
NEC operates major manufacturing and service facilities in Columbus, Ohio, and Brownsville, Texas, with executive and operational leadership at both locations. NEC has traditionally placed attorneys in senior leadership roles within its Commercial department because it views legal judgment, commercial strategy, and project execution as interconnected business functions.
This position offers substantial experience negotiating sophisticated agreements for high-value power-generation and critical-infrastructure projects. As the attorney learns NEC’s customers, technology, operations, and risks, the role may expand into project execution, supply-chain contracting, disputes, financial operations, compliance, corporate matters, litigation management, and executive leadership.
An attorney demonstrating strong legal judgment, commercial awareness, leadership ability, and business understanding may assume broader responsibility within NEC’s Commercial department and leadership structure.
