Position Overview
The Project Engineer II is responsible for performing – and at times leading – technical work to deliver Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Working with cross‑functional teams, this customer‐facing role ensures that technical requirements for utility‑scale battery storage projects are met for clients throughout the United States and worldwide.
This position is based on a Hybrid: Pittsburgh, PA model with minimal travel (Less than 10%).
Key Responsibilities
- Create and review the engineering design for contracted energy storage projects; validate and stamp drawings using your Professional Engineer License.
- Lead the design and review of BESS systems including power conversion systems (Inverters & DC/DC Converters), transformers, medium voltage switchgear, protection and control systems, grounding, and cabling.
- Troubleshoot high voltage battery systems and associated hardware such as inverters, converters, and transformers; perform load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and grounding studies.
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, Customers, AHJs, and multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, civil, and software) to meet contractual commitments and provide technical consultation to junior engineers.
- Develop and review electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and system layouts; lead the development of specifications, drawings, and strategies for controls and protections.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of processes, procedures, documentation, and tools to deliver effective project solutions, including the creation of automated test equipment.
- Ensure all project deliverables are on schedule and on budget, providing status updates via standardized project control systems.
- Serve as the internal Subject Matter Expert for BESS, collaborating pre‑ and post‑contract to optimize customer solutions and refine commercial proposals.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation and assist in creating vendor technical specifications and user instructions.
- Support Field Service Technicians during field commissioning and service operations.
- Ensure adherence to technical standards such as UL, UN, IEC, ISO, ECE, and national electrical codes (e.g., NEC, IEEE) while following established safety protocols.
- Collaborate with Product Engineering to define, refine, and improve BESS systems.
- Assist with permitting, interconnection, and utility coordination processes, and provide technical oversight during construction, commissioning, and testing phases.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in a dynamic, agile technology company environment.
