- Global markets and commodities bank with core business segments: Commodities (base metals, precious metals, energy) and Fixed Income, Currencies & Equities (FX, EM sovereign bonds, structured finance and DCM)
- Compact Singapore office with Asia Compliance team of 4 (including this hire), working closely with Group Compliance in HQ
- The Singapore function is focused on value-add advisory and assurance work, with the main compliance engine centralised in London
- Hybrid working (4 days WFO with flexibility; 4–5 days expected for the first 3–6 months)
- Minimal night calls; occasional travel to Shanghai (~once per year)
✅ Responsibilities
- Act as the primary Compliance adviser and regulatory SME for the Asia Fixed Income & Currencies (FIC) team, with secondary coverage of Commodities (metals and energy)
- Provide real-time, pre-trade regulatory and sanctions judgement at the point of execution during Asian hours, supporting pricing, counterparty selection and risk decisions
- Lead Compliance engagement on new products, business initiatives and significant transactions, including Asia FIC build-out, RMB/EM/G10 FX growth and commodities-related developments
- Support the business in designing and operating effective first-line controls and risk management practices
- Lead interpretation and desk-level implementation of regulatory change (best execution, market abuse, trade reporting)
- Perform routine over-the-desk monitoring of desk conduct, trading activity and business controls, identifying and escalating conduct, regulatory and financial crime concerns
- Act as the Asia-hours first point of response for compliance and sanctions queries, and escalation conduit into London's centralised surveillance and control-room functions
- Oversee representative licensing, RNF and related MAS notification processes
- Deliver desk-specific compliance training for FIC and Commodities
- Support regulatory inspections, thematic reviews and examinations as the primary Compliance SME for desk-related matters
🎯 Requirements
- Minimum 12 years' experience in regulatory compliance within a banking environment (IB or Global Markets focus essential)
- Strong understanding of commodities trading and investment banking products and the associated regulatory frameworks
- Technically strong with the ability to work independently as a senior individual contributor
- Relevant degree required; a legal background would be an added advantage
- Familiarity with internal or external audit disciplines a strong advantage
- Candidates from big banking backgrounds well suited; a commodities background is ideal but not essential — the main focus is commodities trading advisory work, and the bank is open to candidates who want to learn beyond FIC advisory
- Mandarin a plus for communicating with the Shanghai office
- Resilient, detail-oriented and comfortable navigating complexity and ambiguity
