Creative UI Designer
About the Role
Make Studios is looking for a mid-level Creative UI Designer to design engaging digital interfaces and interactive experiences for museums, exhibitions, events, visitor attractions, and brand campaigns.
You will work across a varied range of projects, including museum interactives, touchscreen kiosks, HTML5 applications, campaign websites, and Unity-based games.
This is not a role focused only on standard websites or mobile applications. Many of our interfaces are used in physical spaces, on large touchscreens, interactive displays, projection installations, and custom-built digital exhibits.
You should be comfortable adapting your design style to different client brands, audiences, subject matter, and project environments. You will be required to travel overseas for regional projects.
Key Responsibilities
UI and Visual Design
- Design user interfaces for museum exhibits, interactive installations, touchscreen kiosks, games, websites, and campaign experiences
- Develop visually engaging design concepts based on client briefs, brand guidelines, exhibition themes, and project objectives
- Adapt designs across different screen sizes, resolutions, orientations, and aspect ratios
- Design interfaces suitable for large-format touchscreens and public-facing installations
- Create and maintain consistent visual systems across multiple screens and experiences within the same project
- Produce polished high-fidelity designs that developers can implement accurately
Interaction and User Experience
- Develop user flows, wireframes, interaction sequences, and screen transitions
- Consider how visitors approach, understand, and interact with an exhibit
- Simplify complex content into easy-to-understand visual interactions
- Design for short visitor attention spans and fast, intuitive interactions
- Consider physical factors such as touchscreen size, viewing distance, reach, accessibility, lighting, and spatial flow
- Participate in usability reviews and improve designs based on testing and client feedback
Game and Interactive Experience Design
- Design interfaces for Unity-based games, quizzes, simulations, and interactive experiences
- Work with developers to define interaction behaviour, animations, transitions, and visual feedback
- Design experiences that are engaging while remaining easy for first-time users to understand.
- Support the creation of game assets, interface animations, visual effects, and other on-screen elements
Website and Campaign Design
- Design responsive websites, microsites, landing pages, and digital campaign experiences
- Create layouts for desktop, tablet, mobile, and unusual display formats where required
- Develop design systems and reusable components for front-end implementation
- Work closely with HTML5 developers to ensure that the final output reflects the approved design
- Review developed interfaces and provide clear feedback on visual accuracy, spacing, typography, animation, and responsiveness
Creative Development
- Research visual references, interaction trends, exhibition design, gaming interfaces, and emerging digital experiences
- Develop mood boards, visual directions, and design treatments during the concept stage
- Contribute ideas during brainstorming sessions and project pitches
- Create mock-ups and presentation visuals to communicate proposed experiences to clients
- Explore different visual styles rather than applying the same design approach to every project
- Balance creativity with usability, technical feasibility, budget, and project timelines
Collaboration and Project Delivery
- Work closely with creative directors, project managers, developers, animators, content teams, and technical specialists
- Interpret project briefs, client requirements, brand guidelines, and content provided by stakeholders
- Present design concepts and explain the reasoning behind design decisions
- Respond professionally to feedback and refine designs through multiple review stages
- Prepare organised design files, assets, specifications, and handover materials for developers
- Coordinate with developers to ensure that designs are technically practical and implemented correctly
- Support testing, client reviews, and final adjustments before deployment
- Occasionally attend site visits, installations, or user-testing sessions
Requirements
- Diploma or degree in Visual Communication, Communication Design, Interactive Media, Digital Media, Graphic Design, UI/UX Design, or a related field
- Approximately 3 to 5 years of relevant professional design experience
- A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality UI, digital, interactive, or visual design work
- Strong visual - design fundamentals, including typography, layout, colour, composition, hierarchy, and branding
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Knowledge of animation and 3D software is a plus
- Experience creating wireframes, user flows, interface designs, and interactive prototypes
- Ability to design across different visual styles and follow varied client brand guidelines
- Understanding of responsive design and how interfaces are implemented by front-end developers
- Able to prepare organised and production-ready design files
- Able to communicate ideas clearly and work effectively with a multidisciplinary team
- Comfortable receiving feedback and revising work within project timelines
Preferred Experience
Experience designing interfaces for museums, exhibitions, visitor attractions, events, or experiential installations.
- Experience designing touchscreen kiosks or large-format interactive displays
- Experience designing interaction with external sensors and alternative inputs
- Experience designing game interfaces, Unity applications, quizzes, or gamified experiences
- Experience working with animation, motion graphics, or interactive transitions
- Basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and front-end development constraints
- Familiarity with Unity development workflows and the preparation of UI assets for Unity
- Illustration, 3D modelling, or motion-design skills would be an advantage
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who
- Has strong creative instincts but does not sacrifice usability
- Can move comfortably between corporate, playful, educational, cultural, premium, and experimental visual styles
- Is interested in interactive technology, games, exhibitions, and digital storytelling
- Understands human centric design
- Can take ownership of a design assignment from initial concept through final implementation
- Is comfortable solving unfamiliar design problems rather than relying only on standard UI patterns
- Works well with developers and understands that good design must also be technically achievable
- Willing to learn about new display technologies, sensors, installations, and interaction methods
Portfolio Requirements
Applicants should submit a portfolio that demonstrates
- Completed UI and digital-interface projects
- Strong visual-design ability across more than one style
- Examples of interaction flows or user-experience thinking
- Touchscreen, exhibition, kiosk, gaming, or experiential projects, where available
- Clear evidence of the applicant’s individual contribution to each project
Portfolios consisting mainly of graphic-design layouts, social-media graphics, or branding work without digital-interface examples may not be suitable for this position.
