Grade 1 Head Teacher

The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York.

Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Browning is searching for a full-time Grade 1 Head Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $75,000-115,000, commensurate with experience--an exact offer reflects a candidate’s relevant experience, skill level, and the responsibilities of the role.

A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required, while an advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

Grade 1 Head Teachers are responsible for building strong relationships with students and colleagues in order to deliver the content and curriculum of the Browning program. Successful Browning teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy.

Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well. Among other things, Grade 1 Head Teachers are tasked with:

• Planning and delivering instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and social studies to their homeroom class
• Developing and implementing an inspiring curriculum in conjunction using Browning’s Target-Focused Teaching and studentship methods to ensure student growth and alignment
• Shepherding both the social-emotional and academic growth of the boys in their care
• Cultivating a classroom environment that is warm and welcoming, while holding students to high expectations for excellence
• Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
• Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty and the Grade 1 teaching team
• Communicating with families about curricular and student matters on a regular basis, including in written reports and parent-teacher conferences
• Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
• Performing non-classroom duties such as dismissal and lunch duty
• Heartily contributing to the school community

A successful Grade 1 Head Teacher will possess most or all of the following:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferred) in elementary education or a related field
• Experience working with Lower School aged children in a school setting
• Knowledge and appreciation of working with boys
• Strong classroom management skills in creating a warm and productive learning environment for all students
• Knowledge of teaching pedagogy in literacy, math, and social studies
• Understanding and appreciation of teaching students from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to proactively collaborate with students, faculty, and families
• Refined writing and organizational skills
