Position Summary

The Kim research group at the University of Illinois Chicago seeks a motivated Extra Help Research Engineering Assistant to drive the development and optimization of high-energy Lithium-Sulfur (LiS) battery technologies. This role focuses on the end-to-end process of cell fabrication, from coin and pouch cell assembly to rigorous electrochemical evaluation.

The researcher will play a critical role in bridging the gap between material synthesis and full-cell performance, providing data-driven insights to improve cycle life and energy density.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Cell Fabrication and Assembly: electrode fabrication, cell assembly, and process optimization
• Battery cell performance evaluation: performance testing, data analysis, and failure analysis
• Conduct spectroscopic analysis, ion transport measurements, and electrochemical analysis to understand the mass transport and adsorption/desorption mechanisms.
• Collaborate with senior PhD researchers to perform numerical simulations and data analysis for a comprehensive understanding of the system.
• Contribute to the documentation of experimental procedures, data analysis, and research findings.
• Cell Fabrication and Assembly: electrode fabrication, cell assembly, and process optimization
• Electrochemical Characterization: performance testing, data analysis, and failure analysis
• Reporting
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Any one or any combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the following categories:
• college course work in engineering, computer science, physical science, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
• 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
• Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
• 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
• Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
• work experience in laboratory techniques, including coordinating the engineering, installation, testing, and operational phases of the specialized research project(s).
