Job Summary

The Automation Engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and operating automation systems across the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford and Bakken regions. This role provides day-to-day operational support and preventive maintenance for critical field equipment, including meter skids, water transfer skids, tank batteries and saltwater disposal facilities.

The position requires a strong understanding of industrial communication equipment and systems, including PLC programming and configuration, within an oil and gas production environment. This exempt-level role reports to the Engineering Manager – Automation.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot and optimize automation equipment and communication systems.
• Program and configure PLC devices to support safe and reliable operations.
• Install and calibrate level, pressure and temperature transmitters on production equipment.
• Support meter skids, transfer skids, tank batteries and saltwater disposal facilities.
• Test devices, alarms, shutdown systems and notifications for proper functionality.
• Build commissioning documentation including I/O lists, loop checks, and functional testing records.
• Partner with operations, SCADA, engineering, and measurement teams.
• Coordinate contractors and field vendors as needed.
• Ensure all work is completed in compliance with company safety and environmental standards.

Position Requirements

What We’re Looking For

• Minimum 1 year of relevant professional work experience in oilfield gas plants or related industrial environments required.
• Experience with PLC programming, automation systems and industrial communication systems.
• Knowledge of Allen-Bradley and Fisher ROC equipment is strongly preferred.
• Understanding of electronic flow meters and production equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication, problem solving, organization and time management skills.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline preferred.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are typical of both office and field environments. This role requires regular work in an office setting, along with occasional outdoor work requiring adherence to safety procedures and exposure to varying weather conditions. The position requires movement throughout office locations and operational sites up to 50% of the time.

Frequent use of computers, printers, and other office equipment is required, along with the ability to inspect and review information on a computer screen for extended periods.

Candidates must be able to occasionally climb ladders, crawl, crouch, kneel and lift up to 15 pounds. Frequent verbal and written communication is required.

Field work may involve adverse driving conditions, inclement weather and exposure to high-pressure water pipelines, moving equipment, hot or cold equipment, elevated noise levels, flammable products, and potentially hazardous chemicals. This position requires frequent overnight travel (up to 50%) to field locations within the United States.

Candidates must be willing to work outside normal business hours and maintain a flexible schedule based on operational needs.
