Position Overview

This Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineer opportunity sits within a Data & AI environment focused on delivering scalable, production-grade AI and machine learning solutions across multiple business areas.

The Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineer will play a key role in designing, developing, deploying, and optimizing robust ML systems that meet enterprise standards for quality, reliability, and scalability.

This Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineer position offers the chance to work across the full AI/ML lifecycle, from experimentation and data exploration through to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement. This Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineer role is well suited to candidates who can combine strong engineering capability with advanced applied AI expertise.

Role Context

This opportunity is within the oil and gas sector, supporting a GenAI team in a Data & AI organisation. The role operates in a cross-functional environment alongside data, infrastructure, DevOps, and product teams, with a focus on scalable enterprise delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and deploy large-scale machine learning systems into production using modern engineering practices.
• Build and maintain core ML infrastructure covering feature engineering, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
• Automate the AI/ML lifecycle, including data ingestion, experimentation, tuning, and visualisation.
• Translate business requirements into scalable and reusable machine learning solutions in collaboration with product teams.
• Work closely with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment velocity, CI/CD processes, and data pipeline reliability.
• Develop and deploy GenAI solutions, including enterprise-grade retrieval-augmented generation systems and autonomous multi-agent solutions.
• Contribute to continuous innovation by applying emerging AI/ML practices and supporting knowledge sharing across the organisation.

Qualifications & Experience

• Essential: Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline.
• Essential: 10+ years of experience in software development and machine learning engineering.
• Essential: Strong expertise in designing large-scale machine learning systems and architectures.
• Essential: Advanced programming capability, with Python preferred, and experience with tools and frameworks such as JavaScript, Kafka, and reactive systems.
• Essential: Extensive cloud development experience, particularly on Azure, including AI/ML services and data platforms.
• Essential: Proven experience with Kubernetes, CI/CD pipeline design and automation, and data engineering tools and storage solutions including ADLS, Spark, Databricks, and SQL/NoSQL databases.
• Essential: Hands-on experience with distributed computing and big data processing frameworks such as PySpark, plus infrastructure-as-code tools including Terraform and Helm.
• Essential: Experience building and deploying GenAI solutions using frameworks such as LangChain and Azure OpenAI, including RAG systems, context engineering, multimodal pipelines, multi-agent systems, and Text-to-SQL solutions.
• Essential: Strong understanding of data processing and handling large structured and unstructured datasets, together with solid Linux, scripting, and networking fundamentals.
• Essential: Excellent communication skills and experience working in agile, cross-functional, and globally distributed teams.
• Desirable: Experience with AWS or GCP machine learning platforms.
• Desirable: Front-end development with React or back-end development with .NET/C#.
• Desirable: Commercial awareness and an understanding of business value delivery.
