Staff Nurse, Band 5

56 Dean Street is the UK’s busiest Sexual Health and HIV Service based in Soho, in the Heart of London’s West End.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and empathetic Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our large busy team who have a passion for the speciality, our patients and for the LGBT community we look after who make up 70% of our patient co-hort.

We are actively involved in our in-reach and outreach services aimed at the Trans/Non-Binary community, Sex Workers, Homeless populations and look after over 25,000 MSM who take PrEP. We are especially interested in Nurses who currently work in GUM or coming from an acute background and who have a passion for delivering patient focused care with drive and empathy.

A structured training pathway is established to provide Nurses with the skills and support to work within this demanding but very rewarding service.

This Staff Nurse post includes seeing asymptomatic, symptomatic patients, and providing treatments. We would expect the Band 5 Staff Nurse to also take on in house training as needed and be motivated to advance their skill set while being a team player to all members of the Multi-disciplinary Team.

Main duties of the job

• To maintain and deliver a high standard of nursing care, demonstrating a professional and ethical responsibility.
• To build on clinical experience, leadership and teaching skills through nursing practice.
• To demonstrate a commitment to the mentorship of pre and post registration learners.
• To be involved in the development and implementation of outreach work and other service developments.
• To act as a coordinator of the clinic in the absence of a senior member of the nursing team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• To assess individual patient needs and requirements without supervision.
• To plan, implement, and evaluate relevant programmes of care for individual patients within the clinic’s guidelines.
• To facilitate effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure appropriate nursing input into patient care discussions.
• To take an active part in the development and implementation of clinical audit and research.
• To be competent to supply and administer medications under a Patient Group Direction.
• To maintain clear and accurate documentation in line with unit and Trust standards.
• To be aware of all the Directorate and Trust Policies and Guidelines and ensure all actions are carried out accordingly.
• To demonstrate counselling skills, including pre and post HIV antibody test counselling.
• To order investigations and provide test results to patients as per clinic protocol.
• To be competent in the Triage of emergency patients according to directorate-wide guidelines.
• To work in an outreach setting as required.
• Advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, with particular reference to smoking cessation, diet, immunisation and sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
• Assess and supports patients with adherence and understanding of their medication.

Experience

Essential

• Recent GU experience including male and female patients
• Experience of health promotion and education. Evidence of teaching and assessing

Desirable

• Preceptorship, gynaecology, HIV, family planning, counselling, research, outreach and other experience related to the speciality.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Teaching and assessing
• Demonstrates knowledge of stress management
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Awareness of current nursing issues
• Competent in IT
• Good communicator

Desirable

• Knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of GU-competent examination in male and female patients
• Venepuncture, microscopy, cervical cytology
• Knowledge of HIV and related issues
