Trainee Data Engineer Apprenticeship

Join interactive investor as a Trainee Data Engineer to support and improve the Data Platform, gaining hands-on experience in data engineering within a leading UK investment platform.

Your Role

Here’s what you will be doing

• Support daily Data Platform operations, including monitoring scheduled jobs and investigating failures under guidance
• Contribute to developing and maintaining ELT/ETL pipelines using Dagster, following established patterns and proposing improvements
• Assist in building and maintaining warehouse structures such as star schemas and slowly changing dimensions
• Draft, test, and document reusable SQL queries and data extracts for Data Analysts and business users
• Support triage and delivery of ad-hoc Data Request tickets by gathering requirements and validating outputs
• Maintain data documentation including data dictionaries, lineage notes, and catalogue updates
• Support integrations for data pipelines with business systems and APIs, following secure coding practices
• Run and extend data quality checks and observability, raising anomalies and supporting investigations
• Learn and apply performance and cost best practices in Snowflake with appropriate approvals
• Work to strong DataOps practices including Git version control, code reviews, CI/CD, and environment promotion
• Follow privacy, security, and governance requirements, maintaining auditability and access controls
• Support simple operational MI or ad-hoc outputs via Streamlit and occasionally Power BI
• Complete agreed training and learning modules as part of the apprenticeship programme

About You

The company is looking for

• At least 18 years old as of 1st September 2026
• UK/EEA citizen or resident in the UK/EEA continuously for the last 3 years
• Eligible to work in the UK and not in full-time education
• Achieved or predicted to achieve a level 3 qualification (e.g., A-levels or equivalent) in 2026
• Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent) grades A* to C (new grades 9 to 4)
• Must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject
• Desirable: understanding of SQL, Python, core database concepts, and data modelling
• Desirable: level 4 qualification in Data or Computer Science

Training & Development

Develop technical knowledge and professional skills through a structured apprenticeship programme, gaining valuable work experience and achieving a Level 5 Data Engineer Apprenticeship over 18–20 months. Training covers data engineering concepts, data quality, governance, automation, and emerging technologies.

Career Progression

Complete the apprenticeship to achieve a Level 5 Data Engineer qualification, preparing for a career in data engineering within an innovative and fast-paced Data and Innovation team.
