Senior Operational Accountant (JIB & Cash Application)

PO&G Resources is a rapidly growing, twenty-seven-year-old private oil and gas company. With the ongoing expansion of our operations across multiple areas within the US, the company is hiring an Senior Operational Accountant in our Houston headquarters office.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Operational Accountant (JIB & Cash Application) to own joint interest billing (JIB) and daily cash application across multiple entities.

This role combines full-cycle JIB and operational accounting with strong, hands-on cash application—recording and applying incoming JIB/AR, revenue, and miscellaneous receipts, resolving complex reconciling items, and completing monthly cash reconciliations ahead of the fifth workday.

As a senior individual contributor, the accountant prepares and reviews journal entries and reconciliations, coordinates joint venture audits, serves as a subject-matter resource on JOA/COPAS and cash processes, mentors junior accountants, and drives process and control improvements across a multi-entity environment.

Key Responsibilities

Joint Interest Billing & Operational Accounting

• Own day-to-day JIB processing for operated and non-operated properties, including revenue processing and analysis of results.
• Prepare and review journal entries, monthly overhead entries, and cost allocations (insurance, overhead, technology, and other charges).
• Prepare and review account reconciliations, payout statements, AR balance transfers, and complex accounts payable transactions.
• Support the Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) process, including monitoring, project assignment, and repair activity tracking.
• Coordinate and facilitate operated joint venture (JV) audits conducted by non-operated partners.
• Serve as a resource for JOA, COPAS, and land matters, and respond to partner/owner inquiries via EnergyLink, phone, and email.

Cash Application & Banking

• Apply incoming cash across JIB/AR, revenue, and miscellaneous receipts, ensuring accurate and timely posting across multiple entities.
• Update and track daily banking activity through banking portals and prepare daily cash activity reports.
• Categorize and deposit incoming checks, and process and book cash clearing entries for operated revenue.
• Execute and record payroll funding, intercompany transfers, and related cash entries.
• Void stale checks and maintain proper documentation for exceptions.

Month-End & Reconciliations

• Reconcile cash accounts for all entities each month, completing reconciliations prior to the fifth workday.
• Investigate variances and provide timely resolution of complex reconciling items.
• Execute the monthly close and check runs for assigned companies, preparing supporting schedules and analysis.

Controls, Compliance & Support

• Ensure JIB, cash, and banking activities comply with company policies and accounting standards.
• Provide audit support by maintaining clear documentation of all JIB and cash activities.
• Support annual and recurring projects—1099s, suspense release, unclaimed property reporting, insurance renewal, and property tax renditions.
• Serve as the ad valorem (property) tax point person, coordinating with third-party outsourcing providers.
• Mentor junior accountants and serve as backup across JIB, revenue, and cash functions.

Required Qualifications

• OGSYS accounting software experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 5+ years of oil and gas operational accounting experience, including hands-on JIB and cash application.
• 1099 preparation and reporting experience.
• Ad valorem (property) tax experience.
• Working knowledge of joint interest billing (JIB), Joint Operating Agreements (JOA), and COPAS accounting procedures.
• Demonstrated cash application expertise—applying receipts, resolving reconciling items, and completing monthly cash reconciliations across multiple entities.
• Proficiency with EnergyLink and DocVue (or comparable JIB/document management systems).
• Strong Microsoft Excel skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface professionally with partners, owners, and internal stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience mentoring or providing guidance to junior accountants.
• Experience coordinating and hosting joint venture audits.
• Experience supporting acquisition due diligence, final settlement statement review, and system conversions (e.g., ODA, OpenInvoice).
• Experience with non-operated property accounting and analysis.
• CPA or progress toward CPA certification.
