Math Teacher & Math Department Chair

Position Overview Are you a passionate math educator, committed to serving the needs of students and working in a collaborative educational environment?

You will be joining SDJA at an exciting time as we clarify and refine the math program in grades 6-12. We are seeking a full-time math teacher and math department chair for the 2026-2027 academic year who will foster strong math fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills through engaging instruction, real-world applications, and differentiated learning strategies.

In addition to teaching five high school classes (see below), the successful candidate will lead the math department.

Key Responsibilities Department chair responsibilities include

• Convene and facilitate weekly departmental meetings to support instructional coherence, professional dialogue, and ongoing programmatic development.
• Attend weekly or bi-weekly department chair meetings with the Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of Upper School.
• Provide instructional supervision through regular classroom observations and formal evaluations of faculty within the department, offering constructive, evidence-based feedback to support pedagogical growth.
• Lead the systematic review and development of curriculum in collaboration with departmental colleagues, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and established standards.
• Support the student course registration and placement processes by advising on appropriate course selection and placement in consultation with faculty, academic leadership, and parents.
• Advance departmental professional learning by coordinating and encouraging participation in a range of development opportunities, including internal workshops, peer observations, school visits, and external conferences.
• Maintain department budget, including establishing financial needs of the department and approving all purchases from the department budget.
• In partnership with divisional leadership, oversee and participate in faculty recruitment processes, including candidate evaluation and the facilitation of equitable and rigorous search procedures. Advise the Assistant Head of Upper School and Head of Upper School on teaching assignments.

Math teacher responsibilities include the following high school classes and policies and procedures.

• Geometry
• Geometry Honors
• Algebra II
• Algebra II Honors
• Statistics

Curriculum Development, Alignment, & Instruction: Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with curricular standards and facilitate active learning; develop and maintain scope and sequence. Create clear objectives and utilize relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction, adapting teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of each student.

Assessment: Assign and evaluate classwork and exams, providing timely feedback to students and communicating progress to parents and colleagues. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other required documentation using platforms such as Canvas.

Classroom Management: Utilize effective classroom management techniques that foster respect, collaboration, and student engagement. Create a conducive learning atmosphere that promotes academic achievement, personal responsibility, and individuality in all students, guiding their behavior towards success.

Student Support and Advising : Guide student behavior to foster academic achievement, personal responsibility, intellect, and individuality in all students. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.

School Community Support : Participate in experiential education programs and take on certain divisional and school-wide commitments as assigned.

Professional responsibilities include attending Faculty Week (the week following graduation), orientation, Faculty In-Service meetings (the week before the new academic year begins), Back-to-School Night, Open House and admissions events, parent meetings, professional development, and chaperoning field trips. Be a role model for the School’s educational philosophy.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Education : Bachelor’s Degree in math or related subject area; advanced degree(s) preferred; and significant background in research.
• Experience : Three years teaching high school math required and two years of educational leadership experience preferred.
• Instructional Design and Delivery : Incorporates a variety of pedagogical approaches; adept with blended and flipped learning.
• Student Differentiation : Meets students diverse needs through differentiated instruction and support.
• Technology : Highly proficient with technology tools such as Google Docs and learning management tools such as Canvas.
• Classroom Management : Skilled at effective classroom management strategies.
• Teamwork : Collaborative with colleagues to align curriculum, share best practices, and engage in departmental initiatives.
• Ethics and Integrity : Upholds high ethical standards and models professionalism at all times.

Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $80,000. The offer to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and years of experience; training; practical knowledge; and education.
