Senior Laboratory Technician - Full-time

We are looking for passionate, driven individuals to join our team focused on Delivering Solutions and Improving Lives. As our geotechnical San Diego group grows, the Senior Materials Laboratory Technician will perform construction materials testing on soil, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete in compliance with industry standards such as AMRL, CCRL, AASHTO, and Caltrans Test Methods.

This role also assists in supervising laboratory staff and coordinating/reviewing the work conducted.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with supervising lab technicians, coordinating staffing needs, and scheduling daily work.
• Perform testing and measurements under the direction of the project manager, lab manager, or supervisors.
• Prepare final laboratory reports and submit them for review and approval.
• Learn and accurately perform testing according to recognized standards.
• Conduct laboratory testing of soil, concrete, and asphalt for civil engineering projects (DSA, OSHPD, Caltrans, USACE requirements).
• Prepare draft testing reports and immediately report discrepancies to management.
• Communicate effectively with project personnel to ensure proper project management.
• Maintain laboratory quality control for accurate test results.
• Perform equipment maintenance and calibration.
• Conduct field inspections, testing, and sampling as needed.
• Exercise sound, professional judgment with minimal supervision.
• Safely handle and transport lab materials (up to 50 pounds).
• Possess a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record.
• Work safely around sulfur cement (a capping compound).
• Communicate and interface effectively with clients and co-workers.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, and/or Caltrans testing procedures for soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, and masonry is ideal but not required.
• Effective written, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to work as part of a team.
• Strong problem-solving skills, including identifying data quality issues.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
• Ability to follow directions, procedures, and learn repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certifications/Licenses: ACI, NICET, CALTRANS, ICC – preferred but not required.
• Certifications such as ACI Strength Testing Technician, Masonry Laboratory Testing Technician, Aggregate Testing Technician (Levels 1 and 2), or Aggregate Base Testing Technician, or the ability to obtain them immediately.
• On-the-job training will be available.
