This position plans, develops, implements, promotes, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the Minnesota Veterans Home - Minneapolis safety and security program ensuring the health, safety, and security of employees and residents and minimizing worker's compensation risk; maintaining compliance with Federal, State and local regulations; evaluating, researching, and communicating legislation to appropriate personnel; investigating work site accidents; and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all staff, residents, and visitors.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

• Develop, implement, and maintain a plan of accident prevention and safety procedures.
• Plan, develop, implement, promote, and maintain an ongoing safety training program.
• Develop and maintain a program for compliance with the Minnesota Employee Right to Know Act and the hazardous communication standard. Develop, implement, and maintain management plans which address security, control of hazardous materials and waste, and emergency preparedness detailing how the organization protects staff, residents, and visitors from harm.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Risk Management Control, Occupational Safety, Safety

Management Science, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, or a closely related field AND on year of a professional level experience.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in any field AND two years of professional-level experience;

OR

Three years of professional-level experience (an Associate’s degree may substitute for 6 months of experience) in one or a combination of the following areas:

• Developing and monitoring or auditing safety programs.
• Workers' Compensation.
• Health promotion/wellness programs.
• Occupational safety and health requirements.

In addition to the above listed education and/or experience, you must also have:

• Knowledge of State Health Department regulations.
• Knowledge of health and safety and environmental health regulations (e.g., applicable OSHA, MN OSHA, EPA, MPCA regulations and/or NFPA standards and State of Minnesota State Fire and area building codes).
• Communication skills sufficient to conduct investigations, process reports and train on safety, health, and security issues.
• Ability to develop, implement and present a comprehensive training program on safety issues/policies/practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
• Experience working in a healthcare or long-term care facility.
• Experience conducting inspections, determining compliance, and enforcing adherence to OSHA laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of and ability to manage physical security to include contracted security staff, security software, and maintenance of security hardware.
• Knowledge in emergency preparedness and management.
• Demonstrated culture competence working with diverse populations.

This position also requires successful completion of the following

• Employment reference checks will be conducted on finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance and contact with the applicant's former employer(s).
• A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.
• A Minnesota Department of Human Services (OHS) background check will be conducted on finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
