The Role

The Production Underwriter owns the account from first submission to bound policy, and everything in between. This is a market-facing production role, which means you carry both the relationships and the pen. You'll prospect and build with agency and broker partners, structure and price risk inside your delegated authority, and close business that hits premium goals without compromising profitability.

The heart of the job is the negotiation and the close, helping the agent and insured navigate our appetite and products to land on the right solution for their business. Our underwriting technology takes the busywork off your plate so you can spend your time where it counts: building relationships and writing business.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Business Development

• Drive new business through proactive, persistent agent and broker engagement.
• Support and execute a broker marketing plan aligned to our specialty segments.
• Keep an active, qualified pipeline, and move deals through it with speed.
• Negotiate and close deals to meet or beat monthly, quarterly, and annual premium goals.

Broker & Agent Relationships

• Build and deepen relationships with retail and wholesale partners until you're their go-to market in our verticals.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for submissions, deal structuring, and negotiation.
• Run regular broker meetings and in-person visits, and deliver the communication & responsiveness that earns loyalty.

Underwriting & Risk

• Evaluate, select, and price new and renewal business within your delegated authority.
• Analyze risk across specialty lines using Bluefields' data-driven underwriting tools.
• Structure terms, conditions, and pricing that match our appetite and the market.
• Review complete submissions: applications, loss runs, financials, and supporting documentation.

Portfolio Management

• Own the profitability and performance of your book of business.
• Monitor loss ratio, rate adequacy, retention, and incident rates.
• Spot trends and emerging risks, and take corrective action when the numbers call for it (rate, re-underwriting, non-renewal).

Collaboration & Compliance

• Partner with the underwriting team and distribution leaders to sharpen strategy and guidelines.
• Contribute to product development and underwriting enhancements.
• Keep accurate, audit-ready documentation and adhere to regulatory and internal standards.

What Success Looks Like

• You own your pipeline end to end, moving deals from submission to decision in 24 hours or less.
• Your agency partners trust you as their go-to market in our verticals, and you win full market share of their submissions inside our appetite.
• You take a deal all the way home, through issuance and billing, without needing a handoff.
• GWP, loss ratio, and incident rates land on plan or better.
• You build a personal brand of expertise and thought leadership across our insured and agency networks.

Qualifications

• 3–7 years in underwriting, wholesale, or retail brokerage within comparable specialty lines.
• A track record of profitable production in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. Comfortable in the weeds, able to think big-picture.
• Strong sales and negotiation instincts paired with genuine underwriting discipline.
• Sharp analytical thinking: you can read a submission and a financial statement and price the risk.
• Excellent communication: you turn complex information into concise, compelling narratives.
• High EQ, discretion, and sound judgment with sensitive information.
• A bias toward action and a real ownership mentality.
• Proficiency with HubSpot, Excel/Google Sheets, Word/Google Docs, and standard productivity tools.
• Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent experience considered. Valid driver's license and ability to travel.
