ROLE of the POSITION
This position serves as a senior cybersecurity professional within the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Information Security Office, responsible for advancing and maintaining the university's operational cybersecurity capabilities through security engineering and architecture, vulnerability management, incident response, and technical excellence.
The incumbent manages and administers critical security operations platforms, including Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), and Vulnerability Management (VM) solutions, ensuring the availability, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of tools used to detect, investigate, and respond to cybersecurity threats.
The position leads the coordination and execution of the university's vulnerability management program, including asset and vulnerability discovery, customer engagement, vulnerability scanning, reporting, remediation tracking, and process development aligned with university policy and industry best practices.
The incumbent works closely with campus stakeholders to establish regular assessment schedules and deliver actionable security intelligence that reduces institutional risk.
As a key member of the university's security operations team, this role provides advanced technical support during cybersecurity incidents by conducting investigations, supporting incident response activities, developing detection capabilities, and maintaining response playbooks and operational procedures.
Through continuous analysis of emerging threats and lessons learned from incidents, the position helps strengthen the university's overall security posture and operational readiness.
The incumbent serves as a technical subject-matter expert (SME) in cybersecurity operations, providing guidance, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to Information Security Office staff while supporting campus-wide security initiatives.
The position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, including OIT Communications and university departments, to communicate security-related processes, operational changes, and cybersecurity best practices.
Additionally, the role evaluates emerging technologies and industry advancements, including artificial intelligence-driven security capabilities, providing technical recommendations for future security investments and program enhancements.
This position will also support the other Information Security Office teams by providing additional cybersecurity functions, including auditing, identity and access management, security awareness initiatives, and other operational priorities as needed.
Through technical expertise, process improvement, and proactive security operations, the position plays a critical role in protecting university information assets, supporting institutional objectives, and enhancing UNLV's overall cybersecurity maturity.
Customer Service Expectations: This position is responsible for maintaining a customer-focused approach in all duties, ensuring professional, timely, and effective interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
