TRANSFER LIST - Plumber

This posting is for the purpose of Transfer List Placement for current city of Las Vegas employees who meet the transfer requirements below:

Appointive and Classified Transfer Requirements: Eligible to apply for transfer opportunities within the same classification in a different department OR a classification previously held if the classification is the same or a lower grade than current classification, and employee achieved regular status (i.e., passed probation or qualifying period for classified).

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled plumbing tasks in the repair and maintenance of public buildings and facilities; performs maintenance and repair of park irrigation systems and park fixtures; and performs a variety of plumbing tasks in assigned area.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the full journey level class within the Plumber series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision and work assignments from higher level staff.

Essential Functions

• Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs a variety of city plumbing and irrigation systems and equipment, including flush valves, water and sewer lines, piping, hoses, fittings, adapters, couplings, broken valves and wood components; repairs leaks in faucets, drains, pumps, hot water tanks, piping and valves.
• Unclogs sinks, toilets, urinals; installs and maintains drinking fountains.
• Operates a variety of plumbing equipment and tools.
• Winterizes pipes and equipment.
• Eliminates odors from sewage drains, pumps and vent systems.
• Constructs new restroom facilities, including underground utilities; renovates restrooms to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and the Uniform Plumbing Code.
• Assists in planning new plumbing systems; estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required; maintains files and receipts.
• Provides technical guidance to other city maintenance staff; reviews blue prints; performs inspections to make recommendations on repairs or upgrades.
• Installs and maintains backflow prevention devices; maintains fertilizer injection systems.
• Overhauls pool and spa heaters; maintains filters, pumps, piping and valves.
• Fabricates waste disposal and leach field systems.
• Repairs or replaces gas and electric water heaters.
• Maintains boiler plumbing.
• Maintains and operates septic systems.

Marginal Functions

• Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Responds to emergencies during evening and weekends.
• Performs general cleanup of job sites.
• Performs minor non-structural welding fabrication and installation projects.

Experience

Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level plumbing experience.

Training

Equivalent to graduation from high school, including additional specialized training in plumbing.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Knowledge of

Tools and materials used in plumbing work and building maintenance.

Methods and procedures used in plumbing repairs, replacements and new installation including various techniques used in soldering.

Repair and remodeling.

Waste disposal systems.

Blueprints and layouts.

Operational hazards and standard safety practices.

Applicable building codes.

Using journeyman plumbing tools including a variety of wastewater line cleaning equipment.

Conducting a variety of skilled plumbing tasks.

Assembling and installing air, gas, water and waste disposal systems.
