Position Overview
The Data Scientist supports administrative and clinical leaders and teams focused on achieving the Quadruple Aim. In this role, you will execute projects across the full data science pipeline—from data integration and mining to statistical model development and advanced analytics—resulting in impactful insights for University Hospitals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the discovery and requirements gathering process with key clinical and business stakeholders to inform analytic plans.
- Collaboratively co-create the discovery, design, development, deployment, optimization, and maintenance of advanced analytics and data science techniques to enrich disparate datasets for data-driven interventions.
- Research, design, develop and implement statistical models and advanced analytics to support key strategic initiatives.
- Develop and deploy innovative analytic solutions including Analytics-As-A-Service Business Intelligence dashboards and rapid-fire flash reports.
- Visualize data creatively to deliver insights that integrate seamlessly into clinical and operational workflows.
- Utilize diverse data sources (electronic health records, insurance claims, scheduling, financial, social determinants of health, etc.) to support UH Clinical Transformation and System Operations Strategy.
- Develop purpose-driven data marts in Alteryx and SQL environments (on premise and Microsoft Azure).
- Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
- Collaborate with IT to integrate disparate data systems into repositories suitable for algorithmic development and model training.
- Evaluate business performance and monitor critical operational measures related to shared savings arrangements and value-based programs.
- Propose and develop novel solutions for UH data science challenges, demonstrating feasibility and adapting them to real-world clinical care.
- Support analytics and scientific exploration related to risk modeling, financial performance, and quality of care for managed populations.
- Create technical interfaces to deploy simplified analytics directly to provider portals, websites, or mobile applications.
- Develop documentation, software, support tools, and technology infrastructure to empower analysts and operational leaders.
- Develop processes and tools to monitor analytical model performance and data accuracy; provide ad-hoc analyses and visualizations.
- Engage, mentor, cross-train, and collaborate with data science colleagues to foster a culture of continuous learning.
- Maintain fluency in emerging data science technologies through ongoing coursework or independent study.
- Serve as the technical lead for creative use of diverse data sources in support of UH clinical and business processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned, comply with all policies and standards, and adhere to requirements for safely maintaining Protected Health Information (PHI).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Sociology, Public Health, or a related quantitative/social science discipline.
- 3+ years of experience working with complex analytic situations or big data environments.
- Extensive experience working with SQL/complex queries.
- Proficiency in statistical programming languages such as Python (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn, gensim, seaborn, tensorflow) or R (e.g., caret, dplyr, ggplot2).
- Experience with statistics, business intelligence development, report automation, and applied ETL development.
- Experience in data visualization (e.g., Tableau or PowerBI) and the ability to communicate results to a non-technical audience.
- Proven track record on strategic projects with high visibility and impact.
- Demonstrated experience providing insights to executive stakeholders.
- Experience managing collaborative data science projects.
- Ability to deliver analytics that significantly impact company strategic imperatives.
- Self-starter adept at independent decision-making, ideal for emerging leaders in health data sciences.
- Proven ability to develop data pipelines to support AI and machine learning model development.
- Ability to quickly learn new software and emerging technologies without extensive hands-on training.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in a related field.
- Doctorate Degree in a related field.
- Healthcare experience (Hospital/Health System, Payor, or Life Sciences).
- Experience and working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (Epic and Allscripts), claims-based reporting, and fluency with healthcare coding.
