Civil/structural Engineer

Burns & McDonnell is an engineering consulting firm with offices in Canada and the US, they provide design and engineering services to various industries such as oil & gas, pulp & paper, power and food & beverage.

They are currently seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Engineer – Substations to join their team in Calgary to support the substation engineering group.

The successful candidate will lead and execute civil and structural engineering activities for transmission and distribution substations up to 500 kV, supporting projects from initial site development and foundation design through detailed engineering, construction, and commissioning.

This role includes the design and review of substation grading plans, drainage systems, access roads, equipment foundations, control building foundations, cable trench systems, steel support structures, and associated structural components.

The position will involve collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams, client engagement, technical oversight, mentorship of junior staff, preparation of engineering calculations and specifications, support for procurement and construction activities, and resolution of field engineering issues.

The successful candidate will contribute to major utility infrastructure programs including greenfield substation developments, brownfield expansions, asset replacement initiatives, grid modernization programs, and reliability improvement projects.

The leadership responsibilities associated with this role are project-based and focused on coordinating and directing engineering and design team members to successfully deliver project objectives. This position does not include functional people management responsibilities such as performance management, career development, training oversight, or management of a broader departmental team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

MUST HAVES

• Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible for registration with APEGA (or willingness to obtain registration).
• 10+ years of Civil/Structural Engineering experience supporting utility, industrial, or infrastructure projects.
• Strong experience with transmission and distribution substations up to 500 kV, including both greenfield and brownfield environments.

Experience in the design and analysis of

Equipment foundations

Control building foundations

Steel support structures

Bus supports and equipment structures

Site grading and drainage systems

Access roads and site development

Underground cable trench and duct bank systems

• Experience supporting greenfield substation development from site preparation and civil works through structural steel design and construction.
• Brownfield substation expansion, upgrade, and asset replacement experience.
• Previous experience leading civil/structural engineering aspects of substation projects, including engineering coordination, technical reviews, construction support, and client interaction.
• Experience reviewing and approving engineering drawings, calculations, geotechnical recommendations, technical reports, specifications, and vendor documentation.
• Strong communication, leadership, mentoring, and client-facing skills.
