Job Summary
The Sr. Design Engineer Lead plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the successful execution of foundation engineering projects, maintaining technical excellence, and driving innovation.
The Team Lead serves as the primary technical point of contact for internal stakeholders and collaborates closely with project management, estimating, and construction operation teams to meet client needs and ensure project success. This role leads the SB Canada Engineering team and ensures that engineering initiatives align with the company's overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities of the Role
- Be an active participant in SB Canada's Health and Safety Program, helping to contribute to and promote a positive safety culture.
- Oversee and optimize the daily operations of the Construction Engineering Department to ensure timely and high-quality project execution.
- Manage and delegate engineering projects effectively to support business objectives and construction timelines.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with estimating and project management teams to develop accurate proposals, estimate costs, and determine project schedules.
- Drive research and development (R&D) initiatives to support innovation in foundation engineering techniques and technologies.
- Lead and coordinate technical submissions, including regulatory compliance documentation and industry certifications.
- Optimize resource allocation and utilize assets efficiently to maximize team performance and project delivery.
- Develop and implement engineering strategies that align with the company's business goals, ensuring clarity and consistency.
- Monitor department performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment, recruiting, mentoring, and developing engineering talent.
- Analyze operational data to identify inefficiencies, enhance productivity, and improve engineering processes.
- Ensure the highest standards of project quality, safety, and compliance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Establish and refine engineering processes and systems to track, measure, and optimize performance metrics and project outcomes.
- Act as a key technical resource in the area of foundations; possess an advanced level of industry codes and practices, piling operations, and specialized foundation and shoring techniques;
- Analyze geotechnical data and prepare designs, including:
- Review construction documents to determine scope of work and estimate time required to complete required engineering calculations, specifications and drawings
- Provide technical review when requested by a member of the company's procurement or construction staff;
- Utilize specialized software for design and creation of technical drawings;
- Liaise with internal and external engineering design firms;
- Provide value added analysis or alternative design options;
- Prepare and deliver various engineering-related presentations, both internally and externally;
- Manage budgets for Engineering cost centre;
- Carry out field inspections for quality assurance verification;
- Provide structural engineering support for design of pile caps, working platforms, etc.;

Qualifications – What Will Make You Successful
- Registered as a practicing Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta; registration in Saskatchewan and/or British Columbia is considered an asset.
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience in deep foundation and shoring design, with a strong understanding of industry codes and best practices.
- Experience with construction methods for deep foundation systems, including driven piles, bored piles, and Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles.
- Experience providing technical oversight, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineering staff.
- Solid working knowledge of Canadian engineering codes and standards.
- Proficiency with pile design software such as LPile, PLAXIS 2D/3D, GRLWEAP, and similar applications.
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and deep foundation design.
- Experience with support of excavation systems and micropile design.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to keep projects, processes, and engineering teams on track.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and sound engineering judgment.
