About the Project

The Alexandra Bridge Replacement Project is one of Canada's most significant infrastructure initiatives, replacing the existing Alexandra Bridge that has connected Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec for more than 120 years.

As a vital interprovincial transportation corridor within the National Capital Region, the bridge serves thousands of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit users while forming an integral part of Confederation Boulevard. Having reached the end of its service life, the existing bridge will be replaced with a modern, resilient crossing designed to meet the region's long-term transportation needs.

About the job

We are seeking a Civil (Structural) Engineer to support the pre-construction and design activities for major bridge and infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have a civil engineering background with practical structural engineering experience, preferably involving large bridge construction or rehabilitation projects.

This position will report directly to the Pre-Construction Manager with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Bridge Design Engineer.

What you'll be doing

• Support pre-construction planning and design coordination for bridge construction and rehabilitation projects.
• Review civil and structural drawings, technical specifications and design documentation.
• Assist with the evaluation of bridge rehabilitation requirements including structural repairs, strengthening and replacement activities.
• Coordinate with bridge designers, construction teams, consultants and other technical disciplines.
• Review design submissions to identify constructability concerns, technical risks and potential conflicts.
• Assist in developing construction methodologies, staging plans and temporary works concepts.
• Support quantity take-offs, cost estimates and technical evaluations during the pre-construction phase.
• Review existing bridge conditions, inspection reports and available structural assessment information.
• Assist with structural calculations and technical analysis under the direction of the Bridge Design Engineer.
• Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, constructability workshops and coordination sessions.
• Monitor design progress and support the resolution of technical comments and outstanding design issues.
• Ensure that engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, project specifications and contractual requirements.
• Prepare technical reports, engineering summaries, presentations and supporting documentation.
• Support the preparation and review of tender packages, subcontractor scopes and technical submissions.
• Coordinate with site teams to ensure that proposed designs and construction methods are practical, safe and achievable.

What we are looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
• Approximately three to four years of relevant civil engineering experience.
• Practical experience in structural engineering, bridge engineering or heavy civil infrastructure.
• Experience working on major bridge construction or bridge rehabilitation projects is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of reinforced concrete, structural steel and bridge structural systems.
• Familiarity with bridge rehabilitation methods, structural repairs and construction staging.
• Ability to read and interpret civil and structural drawings, specifications and technical reports.
• Understanding of constructability reviews, temporary works and construction methodologies.
• Familiarity with applicable Canadian engineering codes and standards including CSA and provincial transportation standards.
• Proficiency with relevant engineering and design software would be considered an asset.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical coordination skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary design and construction teams.
• Eligibility for registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer with the applicable provincial engineering association is preferred.
