Position Summary
The Music Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of basic music theory; that discovers talents and creativity of students in building their vocal and instrumental skills, with enjoyment and appreciation.
Essential duties
Curriculum-Related Duties
Planning and teaching
- Teaches knowledge and skills in music utilizing appropriate learning activities and curriculum.
- Work with colleagues and department heads to coordinate instructional best practices and curriculum goals and ensure consistency.
- Plans, organize and deliver lessons consistent with the music curriculum of their students’ grade level
- To plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the International Curriculum, ensuring breadth and balance in all subjects; introducing best practices, high quality resources and enriching school programs.
- Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activities.
- To undertake a designated programme of teaching across all year groups as required.
- To be prepared for every lesson and teach consistently high-quality lessons.
- Be a role model for students, inspiring them to be actively interested in music.
- Set expectations for students in relation to standards of achievement and the quality of learning.
- To follow the school policies and procedures.
- Set up, assist in general preparation, use, tidy and clean equipment after use.
- To provide administrative and clerical support e.g. record keeping, photocopying, filing etc.
- Work within the framework of budgets and promote the department and school through music related events where applicable.
- Assist in school productions, activities and concerts throughout the year.
- Will be required to relief lessons.
- Will be required to invigilate during exams and assessments.
Assessments, records, feedback and student progress track
- Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other record keeping activities as necessary.
- Communicates with parents and school counsellors on student progress.
- To lead, monitor and evaluate the assessment and feedback to students in line with the whole school and department policy.
- To follow department monitoring and tracking systems relating to student’s attainment, progress and achievements.
- Mark, grade and give verbal/written and diagnostic feedback as required.
- Undertake assessment of students as requested by external bodies, curriculum areas and school procedures.
Co-curricular Activities (CCA)
- Supervises students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Willingness to be involved in extracurricular activities.
Class management and discipline
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behaviour to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Able to observe all their students and maintain discipline within the class.
- To maintain discipline in accordance with the school procedures, and to encourage good practice with regards to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework.
Maintenance of equipment
- Monitor use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
Leave and class relief
- To set cover work during any leave of absence and to relief any classes appointed by the Head Teacher.
- Prepare lesson plans and materials for substitute teachers.
Self-competency
- Maintains professional competence by attending and participating in staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
- Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after-school activities.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
- Attend professional advancement seminars, and other events to expand knowledge about music and teaching methods.
Personal Responsibilities
- To undertake duties before the school day, at break, over lunch period and after the school day on a rotation basis.
- To attend meetings scheduled punctually.
- Demonstrate initiative, persistence and resiliency.
- Maintain regular on-time attendance
