Wood is seeking a Lead Instrument Engineer to join a major project team supporting a Malaysia-based development. This is an onsite role where you'll take on significant technical leadership responsibilities across all phases of instrument engineering delivery.

About the Role

As the Lead Instrument Engineer, you'll be responsible for the safe, high-quality, and schedule-driven delivery of instrument engineering scopes. You'll provide technical leadership and project oversight, working closely with EPC contractors, multidisciplinary engineering teams, and key stakeholders to ensure designs and deliverables align with project requirements.

Your accountability extends to ensuring outcomes meet approved designs, specifications, budgets, schedules, and applicable Owner and regulatory standards while managing technical risk and supporting efficient project execution.

You'll direct and control a specialist group of personnel assigned to the project, coordinating the technical standard of engineering, design, and drafting within your discipline project team.

This includes identifying the full scope of discipline work and executing project work in accordance with design instructions and project procedures on safety and quality control, all within man-hour and cost budgets and project schedule targets.

Key Responsibilities

Your day-to-day work will involve assignment of personnel to specific tasks, coordination of supplier document requirements and effective control of review and approval processes.

Prior to project commencement, you'll prepare the Discipline Project Assigned Team Plan for project execution in conjunction with the Chief Discipline Engineer, including review of planning information, preparation of detailed schedules, assistance with Project Quality Plans, and identification of manpower requirements.

You'll review initial designs, specifications, drawings, requisitions, and other data to establish design correctness and adherence to material and equipment budgets at each project stage. Directing the development of project specifications, standards, designs, drawings and requisitions falls within your purview, as does advising the Materials Management Department on engineering acceptability of suppliers.

Regular progress review is essential—you'll submit monthly progress reports and DMRS updates to the Project Engineering Manager, investigating any schedule or budget slippages and reporting proposed corrective actions to the Chief Discipline Engineer and Project Engineering Manager. You'll also review workload regularly to ensure efficient use of discipline project team manpower.

Supplier document control functions include reviewing document requirements and delivery dates for major equipment, compiling and updating a Supplier's Document Index on a monthly basis, distributing supplier documentation to engineering and design personnel, and coordinating their comments.

You'll liaise with Materials Management for necessary supplier information and expediting of late documentation, coordinate with Specialist Engineers regarding designer requirements, and issue final documentation for mechanical catalogues.

Cross-functional collaboration is critical—you'll liaise with other Discipline Project Assigned Teams, Project Engineering Managers, and Client Engineers on discipline and project matters, resolving problems arising from differences between teams and addressing major technical and policy matters.

What We're Looking For

You'll need a degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering with at least 10 years of experience in LNG, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, or Power Plants. Deep knowledge of DCS/PLC based systems and field instrumentation is essential, along with familiarity with PC-based design software for sizing instruments.

You should have solid experience in preparation of requisitions and procurement of instruments and control systems, including experience with control system documentation such as functional descriptions, cause and effect matrices, and IPF narratives.

Project management capabilities in instrument and control works are required. You should be familiar with current computer system applications including CAD, PDS, DMRS, SMILE, and INTOOLS, and able to optimize their use and development within project and department budgets to solve technical problems and promote effective information management.
