SHEQ/Safety Officer

Introduction

We are looking for a skilled and experienced SHEQ/Safety Officer to join a well-established engineering and manufacturing company based in Johannesburg. Operating across the mining, transport, and energy sectors, our client is renowned for delivering high-quality, turnkey engineering solutions across South Africa.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain SHEQ management systems in line with ISO 9001 and relevant legislation
• Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and hazard identifications across workshop and operational areas
• Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all applicable regulations
• Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, and drive corrective and preventative action
• Facilitate and coordinate SHEQ training, toolbox talks, and awareness programmes for all staff
• Prepare and submit SHEQ reports, statistics, and documentation to management
• Liaise with external bodies including the DoL, insurers, and auditors as required
• Drive a proactive safety culture across all departments and levels of the organisation
• Monitor and review emergency preparedness plans and procedures
• Maintain all legal appointments, registers, and compliance documentation

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Minimum 5 years' experience in a SHEQ or Safety Officer role, ideally within an engineering, manufacturing, or heavy industry environment
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Safety Management, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field
• SAMTRAC or equivalent safety certification (essential)
• Solid working knowledge of OHSA, COID Act, and ISO 9001 quality systems
• Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and internal audits
• Strong report writing and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and engage with staff at all levels
• Knowledge of rail, mining, or electrical engineering environments will be a distinct advantage
