Role Description The Experienced Commercial Underwriter is a full-time, on-site role based in Paarl. The individual in this position will assess and underwrite commercial risks, review proposals and supporting documentation, and determine appropriate coverage terms, conditions, and pricing in line with company underwriting guidelines.

Day-to-day tasks include analyzing risk exposures, preparing quotations, negotiating with insurers, and maintaining accurate records and documentation. The role involves collaborating closely with insurers and clients to ensure timely responses, high-quality service, and adherence to regulatory and compliance standards.

The underwriter is also expected to contribute to and participate in continuous improvement of underwriting processes.

Qualifications

• Strong commercial underwriting expertise, including risk assessment, pricing, policy wording interpretation, and application of underwriting guidelines.
• Solid knowledge of commercial insurance products such as property, liability, business interruption, and specialized commercial lines.
• Proficiency in insurance administration and documentation, including accurate record-keeping, policy processing, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Effective communication and negotiation skills to liaise with insurers, and internal teams, and to explain underwriting decisions clearly.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate complex risks, interpret data, and make sound, timely underwriting decisions.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines in a structured work environment.
• Comfort with insurance and office software systems, including policy administration platforms and standard productivity tools.
• Relevant qualification in insurance, risk management, finance, or a related field; professional insurance certifications are an advantage.
• Several years of experience in commercial underwriting within a brokerage, insurer, or similar environment.
