£31,662 - £36,095 per annum, the band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role. In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified, a higher starting salary may be considered.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Second Cook to join the crew of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams, and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining a close-knit team of the RRS Sir David Attenborough as it carries out scientific research across the polar regions.

Role and Responsibilities

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop role-specific skills to complement your time on the ship. There will also be standard training provided that is specially developed for Polar travel.

Some of your main responsibilities will include

• To prepare high-quality, nutritious, and varied meals (including bread and pastries) to the requirements of the Chief Cook and Purser.
• To make optimum use of provisions available to avoid food waste and assist the Chief Cook in recording provision use and general provision control. Assist with inventories and requisitions when required.
• To ensure hygienic, safe working conditions in all galley and stores areas at all times.
• To cater as required for food allergies and special dietary requirements.

Requirements

For the role of Second Cook, we are looking for somebody who has:

• Experience of catering at sea.
• Awareness of health, safety, security, and environmental protection
• Awareness of food hygiene & allergies & dietary requirements
• Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
