We operate the Buzzard, Golden Eagle and Scott platforms in the North Sea where our business strategy is to maximise the value of our existing portfolio whilst at the same time also creating opportunities for global growth.
The post holder is responsible for establishing and managing departmental policies, standards and procedures, and fulfils the duties of Wells Technical Authority as defined in the UK Management System.
The role oversees compliance with the CNOOC Well Examination Scheme, monitors well integrity throughout the full lifecycle to ensure adherence to the Well Barrier Policy and Well Integrity Standard, and acts as the primary liaison with the NSTA on suspended exploration and appraisal wells.
Additional responsibilities include specifying data acquisition requirements to ensure complete and accurate well data, supporting Business Development through technical review of new opportunities, and overseeing the development and management of WellView and Compass databases.
The role is responsible for providing technical and functional leadership across all well engineering activities. This includes supervising and guiding the development and implementation of the well engineering components of the Well Delivery Process and the UK Management System, ensuring compliance with Asset Safety Cases, Well Examination processes and CNOOC International Management System (CIMS) requirements.
The post holder also performs the role of Wells Technical Authority, oversees adherence to the CNOOC Well Examination Scheme, and leads the development, issuance and maintenance of all D&C policies and standards.
In addition, the role supports the ongoing monitoring of well integrity after handover to the Production Asset, manages liaison with the NSTA on suspended exploration and appraisal wells, coordinates annual wells input to the operator stewardship survey and oversees Business Performance Reviews with major service providers.
Collaboration is central to the role, particularly in working with Asset teams to ensure that cost estimates meet required processes and accuracy levels. The role also contributes to continuous improvement by providing guidance on the application and selection of new technology for well engineering projects.
A key element of the position is capability development within the Well Engineering team. This includes ensuring all Well Engineers are competent for their roles, identifying and addressing any gaps through training and guidance, and providing specific training on the CNOOC Well Examination Scheme to relevant D&C personnel.
The role also contributes significantly to resource planning and people processes, ensuring sufficient engineering capacity is in place to deliver the Business Plan and maintain rig schedules, and confirming that adequate resources support the Well Integrity Team’s monitoring activities.
Safety and environmental responsibilities include ensuring any wells that do not comply with the Well Integrity Standard are identified and that appropriate mitigations are established. The role ensures implementation of the CNOOC UK Management System within D&C, monitors compliance with its requirements and adheres to responsibilities defined in the company’s Process Safety Management standards.
Leadership responsibilities include supervising and providing technical guidance to Well Engineering team members.
The role requires a strong technical background across drilling and completion disciplines, supported by experience as a Senior Drilling or Completion Engineer. Having prior Operator experience of well planning in a North Sea development, along with proven experience in well integrity monitoring and interpretation of integrity results is essential.
Candidates must hold an engineering degree and demonstrate a solid understanding of both well engineering and operational environments.
In addition to technical expertise, the position demands strong leadership and team‑leading abilities. The successful candidate will have experience guiding engineering teams and will ideally have completed recognised leadership development or training programmes that support effective people management and decision‑making in complex operational contexts.
The role also requires completion of key industry training and certification relevant to well engineering and operational safety. This includes advanced well control certification as well as formal training in risk assessment, hazard assessment and emergency response, ensuring the individual is fully equipped to lead and support safe and compliant well operations.
In this role, you can participate in our Compressed Work Schedule (CWS), which offers two Fridays off per month in exchange for an additional 45 minutes of work each day. You will work collaboratively with colleagues in the office from Monday to Thursday, and from home on a Friday, when not on a CWS day. Additionally, we provide free lunches for all employees.
