Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Coast Guard is recruiting Marine Senior Engineers and Chief Engineers to an inventory for future vacancies in its Western Region Fleet, based in Victoria, British Columbia. Applicants are not applying for a specific job but to a pool of qualified candidates that may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures.
The Western Region Fleet sails over 25,000 km of British Columbia’s coastline, as well as the Canadian Arctic, the Mackenzie River and Lake Winnipeg, and consists of 13 vessels and 16 lifeboat stations supporting Coast Guard programmes including search and rescue, aids to navigation, scientific research support, icebreaking, environmental response, waterways management, and conservation and protection.
The Chief Engineer supervises, plans and directs the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery and other systems; supervises engine room personnel, financial resources and materiel; provides technical advice to vessel client personnel; leads and participates in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills; compiles and manages refit specifications and contract repair work; manages the watch keeping system; provides change-over briefings to the relieving Chief Engineer; delivers onboard training and mentorship to crew working toward certification upgrades; and represents the Coast Guard during contracted refit periods through quality assurance inspections.
The Senior Engineer, the engineer next to the Chief Engineer in the line of authority, supervises the day-to-day operation, maintenance and repair of vessel machinery, provides technical support to vessel client personnel, coordinates and supervises the watch keeping system while standing assigned watches on a relief basis, recommends material resource needs to the Chief Engineer, and provides onboard training and refit-period technical expertise.
Essential occupational certification varies by stream: Stream 1 (SO-MAO-10) requires a valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 1st Class Engineer Motor Ship; Streams 2 and 3 require a valid STCW Certificate of Competency, 2nd Class Engineer Motor Ship or higher.
Experience requirements scale by stream and vessel class or propulsive power, ranging from senior or chief engineer experience on Coast Guard vessels of specified classes to experience on vessels with propulsive power of 1500 kW or higher. The role is English essential.
Conditions of employment include a Secret security clearance; a valid Health Canada medical for seagoing personnel; maintenance of a valid Certificate of Competency; willingness to wear a respiratory protection device and uniform; and willingness to be deployed, work shiftwork and overtime, and work aboard a vessel for up to 42 consecutive days.
