BMO Capital Markets is a member of BMO Financial Group (NYSE, TSX: BMO), one of the largest diversified financial services providers in North America with US$1.1 trillion total assets and approximately 53,000 employees as of October 31, 2025.
The Energy Team in Calgary is currently hiring a Petroleum Engineer for North America. In this role you will provide technical expertise, reservoir and asset evaluation, and analytical insights to support transaction execution, client advisory, and investment decision-making across upstream oil & gas assets.
Operating at the intersection of engineering, finance, and risk, you will translate reservoir performance, development strategy, and commodity assumptions into lending risk, valuation, and capital structuring decisions. This position is a strong fit for someone who wants to leverage deep technical petroleum engineering knowledge within capital markets.
You will bridge technical petroleum engineering with capital markets decision-making, supporting credit adjudication, portfolio risk management, and transaction execution.
Day-to-day work includes translating engineering analysis into actionable credit insights — borrowing base recommendations, covenant considerations, and risk mitigation strategies — while supporting deal teams in structuring lending facilities through assessments of asset quality, decline risk, capital intensity, and commodity exposure.
Ongoing portfolio surveillance is part of the role: identifying early warning indicators related to production performance, cost inflation, reserve revisions, or capital program changes.
You will partner closely with risk management, credit adjudication, and front-office teams to ensure technical findings align with credit decisions, and you will contribute to syndicated lending processes, interacting with external engineering evaluators, partner banks, and client technical teams.
Beyond reviews and committee work, you will help enhance internal technical models, tools, and processes to improve consistency, efficiency, and defensibility of reserve-based lending evaluations. The role requires delivering clear, concise, and defensible technical opinions in high-stakes forums, including credit committees and senior leadership discussions.
You will support stress testing and scenario analysis (commodity price, cost escalation, production variability) to assess portfolio resilience, act as a mentor to junior engineers and analysts, and contribute to capability building within the Technical Services function.
Insights into energy transition risks and opportunities — asset decarbonization, regulatory impacts, and evolving capital allocation trends — are also expected.
Qualifications and experience required include 12+ years of oil and gas technical engineering experience. You must be currently a licensed engineer or technical professional within Canada and hold a university degree with a focus on Engineering, Geology, Geophysics or a similar background. Prior experience in corporate or investment banking or capital markets is considered an asset.
Technical depth expected in the role includes demonstrated expertise in reserves evaluation methodologies, including NI 51-101, and SEC public disclosure rules, and SPEE–COGEH and SPE-PRMS associated reporting standards.
You should have strong experience in decline curve analysis, type curve generation, and probabilistic forecasting techniques, and familiarity with unconventional resource evaluation (tight oil, shale gas, oil sands, SAGD) and associated development considerations. Experience reviewing and challenging third-party reserve evaluations and technical assumptions will be important.
Commercial and capital markets acumen is required. You should understand reserve-based lending structures, borrowing base mechanics, and redetermination processes, and be able to connect engineering outputs to financial metrics such as net present value (NPV), debt capacity, and risk-adjusted returns. Experience supporting or advising on M&A, A&D transactions, or financing processes is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of commodity markets, hedging strategies, and macroeconomic drivers impacting upstream valuations will support your effectiveness. The ability to provide independent challenge and informed recommendations in complex, high-value decision-making environments is essential.
Experience with data, tools, and modernization is expected. Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills and experience integrating engineering and financial datasets are required. Familiarity with Oil and Gas industry database modeling tools is needed: ValNav & Mosaic in Canada plus PHDWin & Aries in USA. Experience with data analytics tools (Power BI, Python, SQL) to enhance reporting and efficiency is an asset.
An understanding of industry and market context is valuable: deep knowledge of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and the broader North American oil and gas landscape, and awareness that in Canada and the U.S., resource royalties and production taxes on oil, gas, and mining are governed by a distinct mix of federal, state/provincial, and private systems.
Awareness of evolving regulatory requirements, ESG considerations, and energy transition dynamics is expected. Active participation in industry associations or professional networks (e.g., SPE) is considered an asset.
