How Taleo parses & screens your resume

Oracle Taleo is one of the oldest and strictest parsers in use. It reads plain, single-column text best and is notoriously literal: it matches keywords close to exactly as written in the job description, with little semantic understanding. Tables, columns, headers, footers, and graphics frequently produce blank or garbled fields.

Taleo scores resumes against the requisition's required keywords and can rank or filter low-match resumes out before a recruiter reviews them. Because the matching is literal, the exact phrasing from the posting matters more here than on any modern ATS.

The verdict on Taleo

The strictest of the major ATS. Plain single-column formatting and exact-keyword matching are non-negotiable.

Common failures

Why resumes get rejected by Taleo

The four mistakes that most often sink an application before a recruiter ever sees it.

Any table or column

Taleo's parser predates modern layout handling. A two-column resume or a skills table often comes through as scrambled text or empty fields — a top cause of silent rejections.

Synonyms instead of exact terms

If the posting says "Accounts Payable" and you wrote "AP," or it says "JavaScript" and you wrote "JS," Taleo may not count the match. Use the posting's exact wording.

Contact info in the header

Details placed in the document header/footer are commonly dropped by Taleo, so your phone and email never make it into the profile.

PDF parsing quirks

Some older Taleo configurations parse DOCX more reliably than PDF. When a posting routes through Taleo, a clean .docx is the safer choice.

The checklist

Taleo resume formatting rules

  • Single-column, plain layout — no tables, columns, text boxes, or graphics.
  • Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman) at 10–12pt.
  • Spell out acronyms at least once, matching the job description exactly.
  • Keep contact details in the body, not the header or footer.
  • Prefer a clean DOCX when the application clearly runs on Taleo.

Keyword tip for Taleo

Taleo is literal — paste the required skills and titles verbatim from the posting. "Match the words, not just the meaning" is the rule here.

Questions

Taleo resume checker FAQ

How do I check if my resume passes Taleo?
Paste the Taleo job posting and upload your resume into the free scanner above — it flags exactly which required keywords are missing and which formatting elements (tables, columns, headers) will break Taleo's parser. No login, instant result.
Why is Taleo so hard to pass?
It is an older, literal parser: it matches keywords almost exactly and breaks on tables, columns, and graphics. Resumes that sail through Greenhouse can fail Taleo purely on formatting.
PDF or Word for a Taleo application?
When the application clearly runs on Taleo, a clean single-column .docx is the safest choice — some older Taleo setups parse DOCX more reliably than PDF.
Does Taleo auto-reject resumes?
It can rank and filter low-keyword-match resumes below a recruiter's view, which functions like a rejection. Exact-keyword optimisation against the posting is the fix.
