The Department of Economic Security, Division of Financial Operations, Accounting Administration, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Accountant 1. This position is responsible for applying the principles, theories, and concepts of accounting to a specific system.
The Accountant 1 requires access to the system with Federal Tax Information, and will perform defined accounting tasks such as examining a variety of financial transactions and statements for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other specific accounting requirements; reconcile reports and financial data, and identify apparent inconsistencies or errors; carry out assigned steps in accounting analyses, such as computing standard ratios; review a variety of fiscal documents and verifies for accuracy, timeliness, and proper preparation; gather and compile data and write reports summarizing financial transactions and status of accounts for a given period; make entries and revisions to agency accounts, ledgers, and financial records; monitor funds from the federal government to ensure proper matching of state and federal expenditures; and review, monitor and control amount expended from budget(s) to assure that expenditures do not exceed funds available.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department’s business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
●Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial documents to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards; and monitor account transactions and verify related bank statements and the automated case management system for accuracy.
●Use automated accounting systems and applications to retrieve and review data files, analyze information, and track revenues and/or expenditures.
●Examine and verify a variety of fiscal transactions, including billing invoices, payments (including foreign payments from vendors), transfer recoupments completed by internal staff, payroll, or other financial documents.
●Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
●Principles, concepts, practices, methods, and techniques of government accounting.
●Reference materials such as federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, applicable agency manuals, and policies and procedures.
●Analysis, interpretation, and communication of financial data.
●Techniques required to maintain accounting records through automated accounting systems (includes personal computer skills and mainframe computer skills).
●Excellent oral and written communications to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with a diverse group (clients, co-workers, vendors, and other court and legal system staff).
●Learn the Federal, State, and agency laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing the child support enforcement program.
●Multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment.
●Meet performance measures and data reliability goals.
●Two (2) years of complex work experience in bookkeeping, accounting, financial reporting, or related specialties.
●A Bachelor's Degree in accounting or a closely related field is required.
●ARS 41-1969 Each employee or contractor of the Department of Economic Security who has access to federal tax information shall have a valid fingerprint clearance card issued pursuant to ARS 41-1758.07.
●This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business; then the following requirements apply: Driver’s License Requirements.
Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended.
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.)R2-10-207.11).

State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), the state-sponsored retirement contribution plan, and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period. The ASRS defined benefit plan provides for life-long income upon retirement.
You will also have the option to participate in a voluntary deferred compensation program to take advantage of tax-deferred retirement investments.
