Data Center Project Engineer (Lead) – Data Center Field Engineering

Location: Nationwide Travel (80-90%) (TX, OK, AZ, NV, TN, etc.)

Pay Rate: $60-$65/hr

Employment Type: Contract

Heavy Travel focused role! (No per diem involved, all travel expenses reimbursed)

Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead Data Center Project Engineer to oversee the design, implementation, and delivery of physical infrastructure and networking projects within enterprise and colocation data centers. This role serves as the senior technical lead responsible for structured cabling, fiber plant infrastructure, rack deployments, and data center networking environments.

The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience leading field teams, managing complex deployments, and ensuring projects are completed according to industry standards and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery of data center infrastructure projects from design through implementation and project closeout
• Perform site surveys and develop rack elevations, bill of materials (BOMs), cabling layouts, and deployment strategies
• Oversee structured cabling installations including Cat6A, single-mode, and multimode fiber infrastructure
• Direct field technicians, cabling installers, low-voltage teams, and subcontractors during project execution
• Supervise cable pulling, termination, patching, testing, labeling, and documentation activities
• Coordinate rack-and-stack deployments for servers, storage, and networking equipment
• Support implementation of data center networking environments including leaf-spine and core network architectures
• Develop and maintain engineering documentation including cable routing diagrams, patch schedules, test results, and rack layouts
• Lead project kickoff meetings, site walks, customer reviews, and punch-list completion activities
• Ensure all work complies with BICSI, TIA/EIA, and client-specific standards

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience supporting data center infrastructure, structured cabling, and network deployments
• Experience leading field teams and large-scale data center implementation projects
• Strong knowledge of structured cabling systems including Cat6A, OM3, OM4, and OS2 fiber
• Experience with rack-and-stack deployments, equipment installation, cable management, grounding, and labeling standards
• Familiarity with data center networking environments including Cisco Nexus, Meraki, Arista, Juniper, and Palo Alto technologies
• Experience performing fiber testing and certification using Fluke, EXFO, OTDR, or similar testing equipment
• Ability to read and create rack elevations, cable routing diagrams, and technical documentation
• Experience managing project documentation, testing reports, and deployment records
• Strong customer-facing communication and leadership skills
• Ability and willingness to travel 80-90% nationwide
