Financial Controller

We are seeking a highly hands-on Controller who thrives in building accounting organizations. This is an opportunity for an operational accounting leader who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, establishing best practices, implementing scalable systems, and creating a world-class finance function.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will own all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit readiness while leading the transformation of the accounting infrastructure.

The Controller will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the accounting function while designing and implementing the systems, controls, and processes necessary to support a growing private equity-backed business.

This individual will oversee monthly close, financial reporting, technical accounting, external audits, and compliance while partnering cross-functionally to improve operational efficiency through automation and technology.

This role requires someone who is equally comfortable closing the books, researching technical accounting issues, leading an ERP implementation, developing internal controls, and mentoring a small accounting team.

Responsibilities

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
• Maintain GAAP-compliant financial statements and ensure the organization remains audit-ready at all times.
• Lead the preparation for annual financial statement audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
• Research and document technical accounting matters and ensure compliance with current accounting standards.
• Design, document, and improve accounting policies, internal controls, and end-to-end business processes.
• Lead the evaluation, selection, implementation, and optimization of ERP and other financial systems.
• Drive automation initiatives that improve efficiency, reporting accuracy, and scalability.
• Build accounting infrastructure capable of supporting future growth and acquisitions.
• Oversee general ledger, account reconciliations, cash management, fixed assets, accruals, and financial reporting.
• Partner with operational leaders to improve financial visibility and strengthen accounting processes across the organization.
• Establish KPIs and reporting packages for leadership and ownership.
• Evaluate the capabilities of the current accounting team, mentor and develop existing staff, and recruit additional talent as needed, including upskilling or restructuring the accounting organization.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
• Support strategic initiatives, due diligence activities, and other projects associated with a growing private equity-backed organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
• CPA strongly preferred.
• Public accounting experience strongly preferred.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting leadership experience, including experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge and deep understanding of U.S. GAAP.
• Demonstrated experience leading external audits and maintaining audit-ready financial statements.
• Experience building accounting processes and internal controls within a growing organization.
• Proven success implementing or significantly upgrading ERP systems and financial technology.
• Strong understanding of accounting operations, including general ledger, close process, financial reporting, AP, AR, payroll, and cash management.
• Experience driving automation and process improvement initiatives.
• Prior experience within a private equity-backed company is highly desirable.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to develop accounting talent while remaining highly hands-on.
