Job Title: Assistant Estimator

Location: Mooresville, NC

Reports To: Senior Estimator

Job Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

The Assistant Estimator supports the estimating team in preparing competitive and accurate bids for public and private heavy civil construction projects. This position plays a key role in quantity takeoffs, subcontractor and supplier solicitation, cost analysis, bid preparation, and maintaining estimating databases.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and eager to develop a career in bridge and highway construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze project drawings, specifications, and bid documents for DOT and government contracts
• Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors
• Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes
• Develop bid proposals and ensure timely submission of all required documentation
• Perform quantity takeoffs for bridge and roadway projects
• Identify risks, cost-saving opportunities, and constructability issues
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations teams during the bidding process
• Maintain current knowledge of material pricing, labor costs, and market conditions
• Assist with value engineering and cost optimization strategies
• Review and track bid results to improve future estimating accuracy

Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in construction, engineering, or estimating is required.
• Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Physical Demands

• Sitting for extended periods (desk, plan table, vehicle)
• Stand or walk for long periods of time, on flat and uneven ground.

Working Conditions

• Work hours needed to fulfil contract requirements; may also do shift work.
• Outdoors with weather conditions that may be noisy, wet, hot, cold, dirty, and dusty.
• Occasionally extended hours depending on project demands and deadlines
