Our client, a multi-site hospital system, is seeking an Interim Chief Human Resources Officer to provide senior HR leadership following the retirement of the incumbent CHRO.

This is not a traditional backfill. It is an over hire mandate designed to give the organization the leadership capacity, executive HR expertise, and forward momentum required at a critical point in its evolution.

The organization has a significant opportunity to elevate the role of Human Resources from a necessary support function to a strategic enterprise partner — one that helps drive organizational performance, strengthen leadership capability, improve retention, deepen engagement, and deliver a leading patient and staff experience.

The Mandate

The Interim CHRO will work closely with the CEO and executive leadership team to move the HR agenda forward in a practical, visible, and outcomes-focused way. The successful interim will bring stability, credibility, and pace — while helping the organization build the HR capability it needs for the future.

Key areas of focus will include

Strategic HR Leadership

Provide executive-level oversight across the full HR portfolio, including workforce planning, labour relations, talent acquisition, retention, total rewards, organizational development, employee experience, and HR operations.

Elevate HR’s role at the executive table by ensuring people, culture, workforce, and leadership issues are directly connected to the organization’s broader performance agenda.

Workforce, Talent and Retention

• Help the organization strengthen its ability to attract, develop, track, engage, and retain talent across clinical, non-clinical, leadership, and corporate functions.
• Advance practical talent frameworks that improve visibility into workforce risk, succession strength, leadership capability, and retention challenges.
• Support the organization in building a more disciplined and forward-looking approach to talent management — one that goes beyond filling vacancies and starts to shape the future workforce.

Leadership Development and Team Engagement

• Work with the HR leadership team and broader executive group to strengthen leadership capability, accountability, and engagement across the organization.
• Assess the structure, capability, and alignment of the HR team, and identify opportunities to improve service delivery, responsiveness, and strategic impact.
• Provide coaching and support to HR leaders, helping them operate with greater confidence, enterprise perspective, and influence.

Patient and Staff Experience

• Ensure that HR priorities are directly linked to the quality of the employee experience, the patient experience, and the organization’s reputation as an employer of choice.
• Support initiatives that improve culture, engagement, leadership trust, staff experience, and workforce stability in a complex healthcare environment.

Execution and Momentum

• Maintain traction on existing HR priorities while identifying the areas where sharper focus, stronger governance, or greater execution discipline is required.
• Bring a pragmatic interim mindset: assess quickly, prioritize clearly, act decisively, and leave the organization stronger than when the assignment began.

Key Deliverables

• Over the course of the assignment, the Interim CHRO will be expected to:
• Stabilize HR leadership following the retirement of the incumbent CHRO
• Strengthen the credibility, strategic impact, and operating effectiveness of the HR function
• Advance the organization’s talent, engagement, retention, and leadership development agenda
• Improve the HR team’s ability to deliver practical, business-aligned support to leaders across the system
• Help build stronger talent visibility, succession thinking, and workforce planning discipline
• Support initiatives that contribute to a stronger staff experience and, ultimately, a better patient experience
• Provide clear recommendations on HR structure, capability, priorities, and future leadership requirements

Candidate Profile

We are seeking a seasoned CHRO or senior HR executive with experience operating in complex, multi-site healthcare environments.

The ideal candidate will bring

• Prior CHRO or senior enterprise HR leadership experience in a hospital, health system, academic medical centre, or similarly complex healthcare environment
• A strong understanding of workforce challenges in healthcare, including clinical staffing pressures, labour relations, leadership capacity, retention, engagement, and culture
• Experience leading HR teams through transition, modernization, performance improvement, or leadership change
• The ability to quickly assess what is working, what is not, and where HR can have the greatest impact
• Strong credibility with CEOs, executive teams, physician leaders, clinical leaders, union stakeholders, and Board-level audiences
• A practical, steady, low-ego interim style — able to lead, coach, challenge, and deliver without creating dependency

Leadership Style

• This mandate requires someone who can operate at both the strategic and practical level.
• The right interim will be able to step in quickly, build trust, understand the nuances of a complex hospital environment, and help the organization move forward with confidence.
• They will be commercially and operationally minded, but deeply people focused. They will understand that in healthcare, workforce strategy is not separate from patient care — it is one of the primary drivers of performance, quality, safety, and experience.
