The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is offering a postgraduate bachelor's or master's level internship/fellowship at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA).
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists, engineers, and researchers in an effort to develop medical clinical decision support systems utilizing extended reality technology. You will participate in various projects utilizing software engineering, human factors usability, and design/visualization in developing applications to optimize combat casualty care.
These projects include software mobile application development to support extended reality technologies, machine learning pipeline integration, integration of sensors/devices to mobile platforms, and creating novel clinical decision support applications for our warfighters.

What is the anticipated start date?
The USAISR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. The stipend range for this opportunity for post-Bachelor's is $64,000.00 - $69,275.66 and post-Master’s is $75,000.00 - $81,182.41. Other provisions may include the following:
About USAISR
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties.

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency.
Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will have a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or other eligible discipline. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a bachelor's or master's degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
