Join the Edmonton Zone Medical Lab Assistant team! With the primary site at the Cross Cancer Institute and Sturgeon Community Hospital, your opportunity to provide high quality patient care will cover a variety of laboratory duties in Anatomic Pathology.
Duties include accessioning, handling, processing, dispatching and testing specimens, answering phones and directing inquiries, troubleshooting samples that do not meet sample acceptance criteria, and assisting in the gross room.
The successful candidate will apply comprehensive knowledge and experience to act as a resource for staff competency and coaching, participating in local and regional initiatives, as well as assisting with training new employees and students. In addition to bench work you will utilize leadership skills to ensure proper staffing, organized workflow and area safety.
Responsibilities will also include payroll, staff scheduling, maintenance and ordering of supplies/reagents, quality control review and reporting. You will work closely with the MLT IIs, PA IIs, and Clinical Supervisors in day-to-day operations and troubleshooting, and to ensure area protocols are followed to maintain accreditation standards.
Anatomic Pathology is a hands-on department that is a great place to learn about patient care and see some of the most interesting cases that come to lab. We have a diverse team - with MLAs, MLTs, PAs, pathologists, residents, and many learners on site. We are looking for someone who is a leader, motivated, energetic, pleasant, reliable, eager to learn, a great communicator, and a great team member.
As a Laboratory Assistant II, you will perform advanced preanalytical or analytical techniques on specimen/samples or coordinate, prioritize, monitor, and assign duties of laboratory staff in your assigned area. You will resolve escalated issues, conduct quality control investigations and maintain technical and operational procedures.
You will be responsible for ensuring laboratory staff maintain compliance with policies and procedures and will provide coaching and feedback to staff and students.
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
At least 3 years experience in Anatomical Pathology. You must have worked in the Anatomic Pathology department during the last 2 years. Experience with the Slide Assigning system and familiar with the Pathologist subspecialty points. Experience with Third Party requests, send outs, AP Data Entry processes.
Experience performing gross dissection, routine laboratory processes, Faxitron imaging, supply management and use of the ordering systems is an asset.
