Lead Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer | Platinum Mining Project | Johannesburg / Zimbabwe | Fixed-Term Contract

Introduction

A leading international mining company is seeking an experienced Lead Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join the team delivering a major Platinum Concentrator Project currently in the execution phase in Zimbabwe.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Control & Instrumentation Engineer with extensive mining, EPCM and mineral processing experience to provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from engineering and procurement through construction, commissioning and operational handover.

The role is based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, with regular travel to the project site in Zimbabwe and extended site-based periods during commissioning.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Project Manager: Concentrator, you will be responsible for the successful integration of all control, instrumentation, automation and process control systems for a world-class concentrator plant.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, EPCM consultants, contractors and operations to ensure all C&I systems are delivered safely on time and to the highest technical standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

• Lead the development and review of C&I engineering deliverables.
• Review control philosophies, functional design specifications, P&IDs and instrumentation layouts.
• Provide technical leadership for PLC, SCADA and DCS system architecture.
• Ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
• Participate in multidisciplinary engineering and HAZOP reviews.

Procurement & Vendor Management

• Prepare and review technical specifications.
• Evaluate technical bids and vendor submissions.
• Support equipment selection and procurement activities.
• Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs).

Construction & Commissioning

• Provide technical support during construction.
• Resolve site engineering queries and verify installation quality.
• Lead pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
• Support loop checks, instrument calibration, PLC, SCADA and DCS commissioning.
• Assist with operational readiness and plant handover.

Safety & Compliance

• Champion a strong safety culture.
• Participate in HAZOPs, risk assessments and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
• Ensure compliance with statutory, company and project standards.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Electrical, Electronic, Control or Instrumentation Engineering.
• ECSA registration (or eligibility) will be advantageous.
• Valid passport with the ability to travel internationally.

Experience

• 10–12 years' Control & Instrumentation engineering experience.
• Mining, mineral processing or heavy industrial project experience.
• Strong EPCM project delivery experience.
• Greenfield and brownfield project exposure.
• Construction, commissioning and operational readiness experience.
• Hands-on experience with PLC, SCADA and DCS platforms.
• Platinum, base metals or process plant experience advantageous.
